Q7     What time are practices?

A7     Between 7:00 AM and 10:30 AM - Monday through Friday.

There will be multiple practice times.

Your child will be placed according to their age and ability.

A finalized swim practice schedule will be distributed at registration.

Q8      How many practices should my child attend?

A8      As many as possible.  It is important that your child attend practice regularly in order to show improvement.

Practice regimes are serial in nature meaning that they build on one another (i.e. Tuesdays practice will build off

what was practiced on Monday, etc).

The coaching staff uses the practices to evaluate children for placement in meets.

Q9      When are swim meets?

A9      On Tuesdays or Thursdays beginning in mid-June.

Warm ups begin as early as 4:00 PM and the meets last until

A finalized swim meet schedule will be distributed at registration.

Q10      Are practices / meets ever cancelled due to inclement weather?

A10      Yes.  As a general rule you should plan to swim if it is simply raining.  The threat of thunder and / or lightning may postpone  or cancel events.

Q11    When is the league championship meet?

A11     The tentative date has not yet been announced. But it is generally split into two sessions. Younger swimmers compete in one session and older swimmers compete in another.

Q12     How are swimmers selected for championships?

A12     Each team has a limited number of entries.  Swimmers are selected according to their posted times throughout the season.  Not all swimmers will qualify for championships.

Q13     What are the requirements to be on the swim team?

A13     Resident of Avon Lake, between the ages of 5 and 18, that can swim one length of the pool (25 yards) without stopping.

Q14     Is the swim team a substitute for swim lessons?

A14     No.  This is a competitive swim team.  We will concentrate heavily on starts, turns, and stroke technique.  It is important for your child to be comfortable in the water prior to joining.  All swimmers must be able to complete one length of the pool (25 yards) of any stroke without stopping.

Q15    Is my child required to purchase the team swim suit?

A15    No. Although the organization strongly encourages a unified team appearance, any swim suit will do.

Shorts, cutoffs, leotards, and other “street” clothes are prohibited.

Q16    What are the requirements of swim team parents?

A16    There are four main requirements:

1)  Payment of the registration fee

2)  Work as a volunteer during two swim meets.  Assignments will be posted well in advance.  If you miss an assignment, your child(ren) will be scratched from the following swim meet and you will be reassigned.  If you miss a second assignment your child(ren) will be dismissed from the team.

3) Work as a volunteer at the Avon Lake Invitational Swim Meet Sunday, July 12th.

4)  Each family is asked to make a donation of food and drink to support our concession stand at one dual meet and the Avon Lake Invitational Swim Meet.  The concession stand is a major source of funding for our team.

Q17    Will my child swim in every meet?

A17    Most likely not for several reasons.  In years past, our team has been very large and certain age groups have had twice the number of swimmers that the events can accommodate.  We will add the maximum number of exhibition events in an effort to accommodate as many swimmers as possible.  The coaching staff and board reserves the right to assign swimmers to certain races / meets based on best recorded times.

Q18    Who can I contact if I want more information about the swim team?

A18    Meg Sherban at AvonLakeSwimTeam@gmail.com
