CARDIO CONDITIONING PRE-SEASON PROGRAM

Due to the impressive results we have had from our strength program this past summer, an 18 week cardio program is underway at Open Gyms which will take us all the way up to our opening game of the season. Just wanted to make everyone aware of the conditioning level we expect you to be at when the season arrives. We will be doing it as a team, but you can easily do it anywhere if you can't make it to our sessions. Strength and Conditioning were the two areas that we really wanted to improve on this off season, and having seen the dramatic results of our Strength workouts, I am anxious to see what we can accomplish with our Conditioning. The next three weeks are listed below, and I will update weekly as we progress. You should be doing the running anywhere from 2 - 3 days a week, and be running at 70-90% speed and increase that as your cardio improves. Since each of you will be at different cardio levels at the beginning, if you have to walk, then walk, just try to keep moving. If you need to stop then do so.  Always have water with you and drink as needed. The goal is to just get better each day.

Nov 13th - Nov 19th - 15 seconds running, 15 seconds rest, 2 sets of 12 repetitions (2:00 dribble/jog between sets)

LEWISTOWN — Junior Eleana Eckley was named the recipient of the Jenna Feathers Award on Wednesday, presented annually to Mifflin County’s best girls basketball player.

Rylie Rittenhouse and Ericka Lepley finished second and third in the voting, respectively.

“It means a lot coming from the coaches, families and everyone supporting us,” Eckley said. “Coming from the community, this means a lot.”

Eckley averaged a team-best18 points per game, scoring a team-high 413 points on the campaign. Her 84 two-point field goals were tied for first on the squad with Rittenhouse. She was one of only two players to have more than 150 attempts, sinking 51.5 percent of her shots.

The star junior was also voted first-team all-Mid-Penn Commonwealth.

Without looking too much into the future, it’s something Eckley hopes to repeat in her senior season.

“It’s one thing to strive for,” she said. “I want to keep pushing and putting in all the work to help the team, but also striving to be the best individual player I can.”

Eckley will be the first to say the award may have been honored to her, but knows much of the success is a tribute to her teammates, and especially this year.

“I felt we came together more as a team and had better chemistry than we’ve had in the past couple of years,” she said. “That was probably one of my favorite moments.”

She often shied away from having to talk about herself, not short on giving credit where its due whether its teammates, coaches, friends or family.

But there is one game that sticks out to her this past season more than other. She scored a season-high 35 points against Carlisle and had another 30 point game against Central Dauphin East. The points are nice, but the wins are more meaningful to the player.

“The time when we went down there to CD East and beat them to finally get into districts, that was just something we all strived for,” she said. “When we got that win, and got to districts, it felt really good.”

Eckley will return to the courts for Mifflin County for her senior season in hopes of continuing the success she’s had thus far.

The Jenna Feathers Award is presented annually by Big Lewie (WLUI) radio to Mifflin County’s top girls basketball player. Nominees are voted on by local media, including The Sentinel, and representatives of the Mifflin County High School’s athletic department. Each voter chose three candidates, with points awarded to first, second and third-place vote recipients and the award going to the player with the highest vote total.
