Local teams begin basketball season
December 4, 2014
Lewistown Sentinel Save |,
SOUTHERN HUNTINGDON - Two local teams may get to see what they are made of very quickly, especially if they happen to collide in this weekend's tip-off tournament at Southern Huntingdon High School.
Mount Union, led by seniors Trevon Walker, B.J. Loner and Kole House will open the tournament Friday night against Fairfield.
On the other side, an upstart Juniata, who reached the District playoffs in coach Al Ream's first-year, will start a year that includes high expectations against host Southern Huntingdon.
If both teams are fortunate enough to win their first-round match-ups, the two teams will battle for the championship and a 2-0 start at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday.
The Mifflin County Tip-off Tournament will run Friday and Saturday night.
The boys team, under new coach Shane Spencer will open the tournament at 7 p.m. Friday with the girls game following.
Both Greenwood's boys and girls teams will also open their seasons this weekend.
The boys team is looking to replace five seniors who all had critical roles last season when they open the Paul Corby Tip-Off Tournament at Boiling Springs High School.
They will tackle the host Boiling Springs in the first-round at 8:00 p.m. Friday.
A win for the Wildcats would secure a championship spot with the winner of the other game between East Pennsboro and Spring Grove.
On the girls' side, defensively-minded Greenwood will host the PeCo Tournament which will open with a non-league game with Newport at 7:30 Friday night.
If the Wildcats come out on the right side against Newport, they will get the winner of the other semifinal between West Perry and Susquenita at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Belleville Mennonite will host a tip-off tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The girls team, led by forward Mollie Morgan will open their season at 7 p.m. Friday against Great Commission.
The boys team will open up following the girls team around 8:30 against Sunbury Christian.
A championship game on the girls' side will happen at 2:00 p.m. Saturday and the boys game will follow around 3:30.
Juniata Mennonite will travel to play in Cambria County's season-opening tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Both Lions teams will open the season with Memorial Baptist (Butler).
The girls game will begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday while the boys will follow shortly after.
If the teams advance to the championship round, the girls will play first at 2:00 p.m. Saturday while the boys would play afterward.
