MC girls handle Trojans

From staff reports Lewistown Sentinel Save |

CHAMBERSBURG - It didn't take long for Mifflin County to start dismantling Chambersburg in their Commonwealth Division girls basketball game Friday.

It took the first eight minutes for the Huskies to triple the scoring of the home team, and in no time flat it was a 68-41 final.

"This is a team we were supposed to come beat and the kids did that," Mifflin County coach Roger Herto said. "We got a lot off our defense tonight and there's no question that's when we're at our best."

Or, he said, in simpler terms, "Any W is better than an L."

Not surprisingly, Maggie Wilson (20 points) and Jessa Wright (16 points) were the offensive spark. The team went a solid 16-of-23 at the line; those two were in for 12-of-13 in that department. Ericka Lepley's 10 was the next largest individual score.

It was more than points, though, it was how the Huskies were able to control the game, overcoming good screens that were the result of the Trojans' defensive set.

"Whatever we called we ran, whatever we called we ran well," he said. "They play man but they played a little soft," and overcoming that was the highlight.

The Huskies won the JV game, 23-15.

Mifflin County hosts Central Dauphin Tuesday.
