Spartans Begin Season with 10-2 Victory

Welch brothers lead victory with a hat trick each
WINSTON-SALEM - Senior midfielder Turner Welch and younger brother and sophomore attack Stuart Welch scored three goals each and contributed one assist each in the Spartans 10-2 non-conference season opening victory against the Watauga Pioneers at Spartan Stadium Tuesday night (March 6, 2012). Senior attack Daniel Leon had had a game high five points with two goals and three assists while senior midfielder Will DeSantis and freshman attack Greer Miller, making his Spartan debut, had one goal each. Senior attack Chase Price contributed one assist, rounding out the scoring for the Spartans. Junior attack Nick Williams and junior midfielder Dominick Hamilton scored one goal each for Watauga.
Leon opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 6:03 of the first quarter, followed by a goal by T. Welch at 2:42 of the first, assisted by S. Welch. T. Welch scored unassisted three minutes into the second quarter (9:00).
S. Welch scored the first of his three goals approximately four minutes later (5:19) on a feed from Leon to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead. Watauga answered quickly when Williams scored unassisted less than thirty seconds later (4:52). Mt. Tabor responded quickly as well with another unassisted goal by T. Welch at 4:17 to close all scoring for the first half.
The Spartans increased their lead to 6-1 fifty-four seconds into the second half on Leon's second goal of the evening, assisted by T. Welch. Watauga scored their second, and final, unassisted goal on a strong individual effort by Hamilton with 9:53 to go in the third quarter. S. Welch of the Spartans scored the next two goals of the quarter, the first at 8:29 off an assist from Price and the next at 6:50, assisted by Leon, allowing the Spartans to end the quarter with a six goal lead.
The Spartans stretched their lead to seven with a goal by Miller, his first as a Spartan, at 4:05 of the fourth quarter, assisted by Leon and closed the scoring with 3:35 to go on an unassisted goal by DeSantis, providing the final eight goal margin.
Spartan junior goalkeeper Charles Thomas played all 48 minutes, allowing two goals and recording three saves. Pioneers junior goalkeeper Brandon Michelsen allowed ten goals while recording 19 saves in 48 minutes of action. Michelsen also collected a team high nine groundballs. T. Welch led the Spartans with 16 groundballs and won 10 of 11 face-offs.
The Spartans are next in action Wednesday, March 7, 2012, when they travel to R.B. Glenn High School to face the Bobcats in a 7:30pm contest. Watauga will next host Mooresville High School on March 10, 2012.
