Defense stellar in shutout
KERNERSVILLE - The Spartans defense, led by junior goalkeeper Charles Thomas and close defenders junior Tanner Somerville, senior Ian Martin and sophomore Austin Armstrong held the East Forsyth Eagles in check all four quarters Friday night (March 9, 2012), allowing zero goals and limiting the Eagles to six shots. Also helping on defense were junior long-stick midfielder Marshall Harris, along with senior midfielder Johnson Waterer and junior midfielder Nick Milligan. Sophomore attack Stuart Welch tallied a game high four goals while senior attack Daniel Leon recorded three goals and handed out a game high two assists. Senior attack Chase Price contributed one assist and senior midfielder Turner Welch pitched in with one helper. The Spartans dominated face-offs, winning all eleven taken, with T. Welch going 10-for-10 and sophomore midfielder Patrick Lydon going 1-1.
The Spartans opened the scoring at 9:03 of the first quarter on the first of S. Welch's four goals. Leon collected his first assist of the night on the play.
The Spartans were able to get four more shots in the quarter but were unable to find the back of the net. The Eagles were limited to one shot and the first quarter ended with the Spartans in front 1-0. The Spartans stretched the lead to 3-0 at half on goals by Leon and S. Welch. Leon scored at the 11:03 mark off an assist by Price, and S. Welch scored off an assist from Leon at 6:45. The Eagles placed both of their shots on-goal but Thomas was able to make both saves.
The Spartans scored two more goals in the third quarter, the first, with a man advantage, by S. Welch at 6:57, assisted by older brother T. Welch. S. Welch collected his fourth and final goal unassisted at 1:29, again with a man advantage.
The fourth quarter saw Leon pick up his second and third goals of the game, scoring unassisted at 10:23 and again at 8:14.
The Spartans improve to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference (Conference 8). East Forsyth drops to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in conference (Conference 8). The Eagles continue conference play when they travel to R.J. Reynolds next Tuesday night (March 13, 2012), while the Spartans travel to conference foe Ronald Reagan High School to face the Raiders next Friday (March 16, 2012).
