Cougars Nip STAMPEDE in Rematch
Jun. 12, 2016
At Moriches Complex today, the LI Cougars held on, surviving a 7th inning threat, for a 2 - 0 win over the Smithtown STAMPEDE in Bat for a Cure Tournament action. Despite Alec's stellar complete game (CG, 7 IP, 2 H, 9 SO, 2 BB, 2 ER) effort on the mound, and a 3 for 3 hitting day by Nick the Stick, the rest of the Smithtown bats were sluggish the entire game.
The visiting Cougars went down 1-2-3 in both the 1st and 2nd innings, as Alec hit his stride quickly, notching 3 strikeouts in the process. Smithtown benefitted from Nick's hot bat T1st with a 2 out single, scorched into LCF. Nick stole second but was stranded as a strikeout followed... one of five the Cougar hurler tallied in the first 3 innings. On a day full of strikeouts and routine outs, Smithtown would not get another hit until Nick smoked a second single to LCF with 2 outs in the 4th. A flyout again stranded him.
Alec's only bump in the road came T3rd. A leadoff walk was followed by a single to LCF. LF Anthony came up firing on target to 3B as the Cougar runner gambled on taking the extra base. Anthony's throw was in time but was not handled for the tag. The miscue allowed the batter/runner to advance to second. Alec turned up the heat, nailing down 2 straight strikeouts. But, a 2 out single lofted to RF dropped in front of Peter to give the Cougars all they would need. 2 - 0 Cougars after 2 1/2 inn.
Like Rob the day before, trouble was a blip on the screen, from which there would be no recovery. Alec would go the distance, with a 2 out, 5th inning walk becoming the only imperfection. He retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.
Smithtown would get a 1 out double from Peter in the 5th, but again a Smithtown baserunner was stranded. In the bottom of the 7th Smithtown's offense finally looked as if it would piece something together. Rob worked a full count walk to start the inning. Nick, already 2 for 2, stroked a lofty single to RCF. Trouble loomed for the Cougars. However, the STAMPEDE bats stalled once again. A foul out to the catcher, a whiff, and a flyout into short RCF ended the game.
Smithtown bats will hopefully have better success at the plate for next week's Boys of Summer Fathers' Day Tournament.
