STAMPEDE Halted as South Shore Elite Hangs On, 12-11

Jul. 4, 2016

Smithtown bats slugged their way to within one run of tying the championship game today, but fell short in the bottom of the 7th as the Elite held on for the title with a 12-11 win.  Smithtown pitching gave up 9 hits, 3 walks, and hit 2 batters in a day that saw mental and physical errors put them behind early.  With Jason on the mound, two first inning errors, a double , and a walk had Smithtown behind 2-0 in a hurry.  Jason got through uneventful 2nd and 3rd innings, but in the 4th the O.B.I.S (One Bad Inning Syndrome) hit and the roof caved in.  The Elite exploded for 10 runs to seemingly put the game away.

Top 4th, the first 4 batters reached base on Jason.  He was relieved by Rob who promptly gave up a single through the right side.  It was misplayed in the outfield to clear the bases.  A single and walk reloaded the bases and the Elite attempted 3 straight squeeze plays, catching Smithtown napping a bit.  Rob was relieved by Salvatore and a swinging bunt single and jam-shot bloop scored the final 2 runs of the inning for the Elite.

After a 1-2-3 first inning, the Smithtown bats seemed to catch fire.  Big Red, Gonzo, and Anthony whacked 3 straight singles, with Anthony's putting Smithtown on the board.  Josh grounded into a DP, but Jason singled to score Smithtown's 2nd run.  Rob got the 3rd inning started with a walk, and Salvatore was hit by a pitch.  Their double steal and an E6 by the Elite score 2 more runs for Smithtown.  The 4th inning saw the Elite have their commanding 12-4 lead in place.  Smithtown kept hitting in the B4th, as Anthony (3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) doubled to left center, and after Josh made the first out, Jason singled through the SS hole.  Rob and Franklin could not keep it going and Smithtown had 2 stranded runners.

Salvatore stayed in his groove in the 5th/6th/7th innings, throwing shutout ball. while allowing only 1 single.  In the meantime, his offense was brewing.  Smithtown erupted for 5 runs in the 5th with Salvatore (1-2, HBP, BB) roping a liner down the LF line for a single, and hustling to 2nd on the E7 bobble to begin the attack.   Nick (1-3, BB, RBI) singled to RCF for the RBI.  12-5 Elite.   Big Red (3-4, RBI) singled to RF, 12-6, and took 3rd on the E9.  Big Red stole 2nd and both scored when Gonzo lashed a single to RCF.    12-8.   Hit Man Anthony struck again, smoking his 2nd double, this time to to RCF to score Gonzo.  12-9.  Josh lined a single to make it 12-9 as Anthony hustled home to end the scoring in the inning.

Smithtown was still in gear in the 6th.  Salvatore worked a 1 out walk and stole 2nd.  After 2 out, Nick walked and up stepped Big Red.  He singled up the middle to score Salvatore.  12-10 Elite.  Gonzo stroked a clutch single to make it 12-11 as the Elite, on fumes for pitching, struggled to hang on.

Hang on they did, though.  In the B7th, Smithtown suddenly struggled for quality at bats.   and face elimination with the Elite getting 2 quick outs.  Their would be hope, as Franklin battled to tally a full-count walk.  But, a good morning, good afternoon, goodnight sequence ended the STAMPEDE chances for the Hot Stove title.
