STAMPEDE Crushes CT Dirtbags in War Opener
Jul. 16, 2016
The Smithtown STAMPEDE fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first, but roared back to run-rule the Dirtbags with a 12 run, 4th inning explosion to net a victory in the tourney opener. Nick's hot bat led the way...after being hit by a pitch and drawing a walk. He gapped a double to RCF in the 4th and later in the same inning launched a near 400 foot mammoth 3 run homer to left field that cleared everything, to serve the final blow to KO the Dirtbags in the B4th. In the Smithtown 17 hit attack, Rob had 2 hits, Jay stroked 2, Salvatore a triple and double, Frankie, Anthony, and Big Red 2 singles each, and Jeremy 3 singles of his own. Along with Nick, Jeremy and Anthony both tallied 2 hits apiece in the 4th inning bat-around.
Smithtown had a difficult road to navigate as the first 5 batters of the game reached base safely for the Dirtbags. A walk and 4 straight hits had Jeremy searching for his 1st out, already trailing 4-0. He got a whiff, but the single that followed got the Dirtbags a 5-0 headstart. Jeremy recovered some, striking out 3 of the next 7 batters, but 2 more singles would end his outing after 2 innings.
Salvatore would relieve to begin the 3rd, but only after a change of fortune for Smithtown. Smithtown got 4 runs back B2nd with Jeremy's leadoff single as the spark. Frankie's single followed and Salvatore tripled to deep left to make it 5-2. Jay and Rob both singled to make it 5-3. With 2 outs, Nick walked and Big Red singled to close the gap to 5-4 after 2 innings.
Salvatore went to work on the mound with his team now within striking distance. He was nicked for a run in the 4th on a walk and double, but his offense was poised to strike once again. Down 6-4 heading into the B4th, Smithtown erupted for a volcanic 12 run burst to run-rule the CT Dirtbags, 16-6. Smithtown sent 15 batters to the plate and had the game-ending 16th run score on Frankie's sac fly to LF.
