STAMPEDE Edges Batters Box 7-6 in Summer Sizzler Opener

Jul. 30, 2016

Smithtown, in defense of their Title 2 weeks ago at War at the Shore, won the flip to be home team.  That put Rob on the mound to face the Batters Box Renegades.  Rob (2 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 S0) escaped the 1st inning after a 2 out single and stolen base, but quickly saw his pitch count rise in the 2nd inning.  He allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, but 2 balks and wild pitch compounded his tricky inning.  After walking the first 2 batters in the 3rd, Nick was summoned to the mound in relief.  Nick went the distance for the victory, allowing 5 hits, but only 1 earned run.

Smithtown got a run back in the B1st when the Hit Man struck... Anthony (3-3, BB) laced a line drive to left center to start his perfect day at bat.  A wild pitch moved Anthony to second, and Wes then reached on an E6.  A balk moved them up, and another balk scored Anthony to get Smithtown on the board.

Down 4-1 entering the B3rd, Franklin walked to start the inning.  Anthony lined a single to CF, sending Franklin to 3rd.  Wes' Sac fly to RF scored Franklin, with Anthony hustling to 2nd.  He took third on a WP and scored on Nick's Sac fly, also to RF.  4-3 Renegades after 3 inn.  The Renegades jumped ahead in the 4th when they tallied a walk and 2 doubles to make it 5-3 on the only earned run Nick would allow.

The realigned Smithtown defense stepped up several times to aid Nick (5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 SO) and keep the game within striking distance.  LF Wes rand down 4 fly balls, RF Anthony snared 3 of his own, and SS Frankie chipped in three assists, including on the game-ending groundout.  But the pressure the Smithtown offense mounted over the final 3 innings would get them the needed runs for the victory.

With 2 outs B5th, Franklin walked, Anthony singled, and Wes walked to load the bases.  Nick dug in and got drilled in the left elbow by the 1st pitch for the RBI, tying the score at 4 all.  Smithtown would surge ahead with a 3 run rally in the bottom of the 6th.  Frankie singled down the LF line and Salvatore followed with a perfectly placed bunt and run single that hugged the third base line.  Frankie took off from first base as Salvatore forced the 3rd baseman to field the ball.  Salvatore beat the throw easily and Frankie never stopped running as he hustled around second and slid safely into the unattended third base bag.  With one out, Josh crushed a clutch double into the LF corner to clear the bases, giving Smithtown a 6-4 lead.  Rob stroked a single to LCF to score Josh, making it 7-4.

After retiring 6 batters in a row, 3 on strikeouts in the 5th and 6th, Nick was tagged for 2 singled after a fly out to RF Anthony in the Renegade 7th.  What seemed to be a double play grounder was missed to make the score 7-6, with runners on the corners.  Wes grabbed a pop out in LF, and Frankie handled a 3 hopper at SS to seal the victory for Smithtown.
