Smithtown Wins On Walkoff Over Rebels, 4-3
Jul. 30, 2016
In a rematch from the previous War at the Shore tournaments, Smithtown was again pitted against the All Pro Rebels, whom they defeated in semi-final action just 2 weeks ago. Smithtown would fall behind quickly with All Pro scoring 2 runs on surprise starter Zack in the top of the 1st. Two singles, a fielder's choice, and a wild pitch would put the Rebels on the board. Zack would struggle through the 2nd inning as he issued 2 walks, hit a batter, and dropped a pop up. Two fielder's choice plays, and catcher Big Red picking off a Rebel runner at 2nd base got Zack out of the jam, but it signaled the end of his pitching duties.
Trying to get back on track, Smithtown would threaten in the B1st with Rob reaching on an E4 and Nick stroking a single to RCF. Stranded runners meant Smithtown still trailed 2-0. Wes singled in the 2nd with 2 outs, but nothing materialized. In the 3rd, Smithtown would again put runners on base. Franklin led off with a single and Anthony follwed with another. Again the STAMPEDE offense stalled, leaving runners on base.
Anthony relieved in the 3rd inning for Smithtown. He would go the distance for the win, allowing one run on 6 hits, while striking out 4 batters. The 3rd inning tested him right away as the Rebels singled twice with no outs. A big strikeout and 4/4/3 DP by 2B Rob stopped the Rebels cold. Settling in, Anthony got a 1-2-3 inning T4th. Smithtown struck for 2 runs in the B4th as Red singled and Frankie doubled to start the rally. Two Rebel wild pitches had Smithtown hustling to capitalize as they tied the score at 2 all.
Anthony got through a scoreless 5th despite a single and a double by the Rebels. Anthony notched a key strikeout, sandwiched in-between a lineout and groundout to sure-handed Nick at SS. Solid play had Smithtown back in their dugout ready to rally. Smithtown took the lead with a run in the B5th. Franklin led off with a single. A FC by Anthony and single by Rob had Nick in position to drive the run in. His single up the middle gave Smithtown a 3-2 lead. That lead would remain until the Rebel 7th. A 1 out walk and an error had the Rebels on the verge of tying the game. A FC groundout tallied the 2nd out, but the run scored to knot the game at 3-3 after 6 1/2.
Leading off the B7th and to help his cause, Anthony worked a crucial 1 out walk after an epic battle with seven full-count foul balls. Rob's clutch single moved Anthony to 2nd. A FC by Nick moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Big Red hit a hot grounder into the SS hole that was not fielded cleanly. Smelling victory, he beat the Rebel SS's throw to first base for the RBI infield single, plating Anthony, to win the game for Smithtown. 4-3 was the final score on the walk-off.
