The Bandits had a bit of a rough outing in the Fourth of July Shootout in Spokane, taking 3rd place in the Silver Bracket and 9th overall out of 16 teams.
In Game one on Friday night, the Bandits drew a solid club in the Great Falls Xplosion. Xplosion pitcher Hocker shut the Bandits out, holding them to just 2 hits in the process. Great Falls scored in each of the 4 innings played and secured an 8-0 victory. Glori Cheevers and Cheyanne Gleave spread the two hits across the box score, but the Bandits were not able to crack the scoreboard. Kadi Bateman and Taylor Carpenter each gave up 3 earned runs, with Bateman taking the loss.
Game two was another tough matchup against the Mt. Avalanche. The Bandits never got the bats going, once again being held to just two hits and zero runs. Held hitless through 4 innings, Kadi Bateman finally busted through with a single and Dee Koeppen doubled, moving Bateman to 3rd. However, that was the end of the rally as Avalanche pitcher Kaylee Rosenbaum pitched her way out of the jam to finalize a 0-5 loss for the Bandits. Shelby Salois pitched a solid game, giving up just 3 earned runs through 4 2/3 innings and striking out 8 batters, before being relieved by Taylor Carpenter.
Game three finally saw the bats get going for the Bandits in an easy win over the Valley Outlaws. The Outlaws did come out on fire scoring 3 runs in the first inning. The Bandits chipped away in the bottom of the inning, startied by a bunt single for Ashlyn Tamietti. Tamietti then stole 2nd and scored on a Shelby Salois single to right field. Then the flood gates opened for the Bandits in the 2nd inning when Maddie Kallsen led off with a single and moved to third base when the shortstop failed to handle a ground ball by Maddy Salois. Salois moved to 2nd on the same error and both girls scored on a ground ball by Shelby Melton. That was followed with singles by Tamietti, Georgia Robinson, Shelby Salois, Cheevers, Kallsen, Taylor Pavao, and Claire Dormaier to open up an 8-3 lead. Tamietti led off the next inning with another single and Koeppen walked. Then Bateman and Kallsen reached on errors, scoring Tamietti and Koeppen, followed by Taylor Pavao walk off single to end the game by mercy-rule. Gleave took the win in the circle with 10Ks and zero earned runs through 4 innings.
Silver bracket play started with a matchup against the Sherwood Park Belles from Calgary. The Belles got started early with 2 runs in the first inning. The Bandits answered with 1 run of their own when Tamietti drew a walk, stole 2nd, tagged and went to 3rd on a fly ball by Shelby Salois, and scored on a Robinson double. They put up 2 more runs in the second when a single by Gleave and another Tamietti walk started it off. Gleave scored on a Shelby Salois single and Tamietti on a Robinson ground out. In the 3rd inning Kallsen and Dormaier reached on errors, while Pavao and Carpenter singled. All four crossed the plate to extend the lead to 7-3. The Belles got one back in the 4th, but the Bandits took it right back when Kallsen doubled, moved to 3rd on a Maddy Salois single, and scored when Carpenter single up the middle. Shelby Salois got the win, striking out 5 through 4 innings.
The final game was another difficult show down with the Calgary Kaisen. The Kaisen put up 5 unanswered runs in four innings. In the 4th inning the Bandits got something going with 3 straight hits by Tamietti, Shelby Salois, and Robinson, but failed to score. Finally in the sixth inning the Bandits busted up the shutout when Tamietti reached on an error and moved to 2nd on a passed ball. Robinson then grounded out and Tamietti scored when the first baseman threw the ball away in an attempt at a double play to third. Gleave and Carpenter split time in the circle with Gleave taking the loss.
Not our best outing, but the girls showed great spirit through it all, continuing to make us proud to coach them. Next tournament is the Summer Sizzler in Selah July 15-16.
Jun 20, 2017 - Bandits Take 2nd in the Gold Bracket at Summer Warm Up
The Bandits finally got out on the field this weekend in Selah for the Summer Warm Up tournament, taking 2nd in the Gold Bracket.
Game one was a tough matchup against the Washington Thunder, the champions of Selah’s previous tournament. The Bandits have played the Wa. Thunder twice before, earning a split. The rubber-match started out as a defensive battle, but the Thunder got on the board first with an RBI ground out to second base. The Bandits answered quickly when Georgia Robinson drove in Jordyn Kallsen with a line drive to right field. The Thunder added one more in the 5th, and four more in the 6th on three bloop-singles to put it out of reach. Maddie Kallsen and Rachel Barsness led the way with 2 hits each and Kadi Bateman had a double. Bateman struck out 3 batters, but took the 6-2 loss in the circle.
Game two against the TC Thunder started out better for the Bandits. Barsness led off with a single and stole 2nd and Bateman drove her in to take the lead. However, the Thunder answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Bandits started out hot in the 2nd inning when Deanna Koeppen led it off with a double. Ashlynn Tamietti came in to run for Koeppen and scored on a Robinson triple. Cheyanne Gleave later drove in Robinson with an RBI-groundout. Barsness again singled, stole 2nd, and scored on hard hit ground ball by Glori Cheevers to make the score 3-1. The Thunder added another run in the 4th, but in the 6th M. Kallsen and Koeppen hit back-to-back singles. J. Kallsen came in to run for Koeppen and Claire Dormaier reached on a fielder’s choice to shortstop. J. Kallsen and Dormaier then crossed home on yet another Robinson triple, ending the scoring for the 6-2 win! Robinson, Koeppen, and Barsness each had multiple hits, and Jaelynn Skok earned the win in the circle, giving up 5 hits and striking out 2 batters.
Game three was a night cap against the Spokane Valley Bandits. In the opening frame, Robinson singled, Cheevers walked, and they both scored on a Bateman double down the left field line. West Plains scored again when Cheevers singled, stole 2nd and scored on a M. Kallsen RBI-single. Spokane Valley broke up the shutout with a run in the 4th, but gave up 5 more runs in the bottom of the inning. The scoring started when Tamietti led off with her 2nd bunt single of the game and scored on a Barsness single. Skok then walked and Barsness scored on a Cheevers single. Cheevers stole 2nd, which paid off when Bateman hit a double to scored her and Skok. Then Bateman also scored on a deep sacrifice fly by Taylor Pavao. The Valley Bandits were mounting a rally in the 4th, but Shelby Melton nailed a base runner attempting to steal 2nd to end the inning. The West Plains scoring continued in the 5th inning when Koeppen reached on an error and Tamietti singled, followed by a base hit by Cheevers scoring them both. Tamietti and Cheevers led the way at the plate with three hits each, and Bateman added 4 RBIs. Gleave took the win giving up 1 run on 3 hits, while striking out 6 batters.
Game four began Gold-Bracket play in a tight game against the Menace NW. The Menace came out strong scoring a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-run lead. The Bandits chipped away at that lead when Barsness singled, stole 2nd and 3rd, and scored on a Skok single. The Bandits knotted the game up in the 5th when Skok singled, went to 2nd on a throwing error from left field, and scored on a second throwing error by the first baseman. In the 6th the Bandits finally took the lead, starting with a Koeppen single. J. Kallsen came in to courtesy run for Koeppen and Pavao put down a bunt base hit. On the bunt, the catcher threw the ball away allowing J. Kallsen to score all the way from first to put the game away. Skok was tops amongst the batters with 3 hits, including a double, and was also the winning pitcher with 5 Ks.
Game six was a semi-final match up with the North Central Washington Sun Devils. The Bandits took an early lead and never let it go, with a 3-run first inning. After back-to-back singles from Robinson and Cheevers and M. Kallsen getting hit by a pitch to load the bases, Koeppen ripped a bases-clearing double to left-center. The scoring went quiet until the 4th, when Barsness doubled and scored on a Skok single to make it 4-0. The wheels came off for the Sun Devils in the 6th when the Bandits put up a 6-spot. Tamietti started it off with another bunt single and stole 2nd base. She then toyed with the pitcher to draw an errant throw and advanced to third and score on a Dormaier ground out. Then Gleave, Barsness, Skok, Cheevers, and M. Kallsen all singled and scored to put the nail in the coffin. Though the Sun Devils did score 1 run in the inning to break up the shutout, Gleave pitched a gem.
The championship game against a very strong Scream team proved to be too much. The Scream kept the pressure on putting up 6 runs through the first 3 innings. Finally in the 4th, Koeppen doubled in M. Kallsen to break the seal, but the Bandits only scored one more as Dormaier singled in Koeppen. The Scream finished it off with 5 more to take the title 11-2.
With a 4-2 weekend and hitting .338 as a team, we are very proud of the girls with a great start to the season. This group never shows any quit and continues to have a great time! Go Bandits!!!
