Bandits Take 3rd in the Silver Bracket in Fourth of July Shootout

Jul. 7, 2017

The Bandits had a bit of a rough outing in the Fourth of July Shootout in Spokane, taking 3rd place in the Silver Bracket and 9th overall out of 16 teams.

In Game one on Friday night, the Bandits drew a solid club in the Great Falls Xplosion.  Xplosion pitcher Hocker shut the Bandits out, holding them to just 2 hits in the process.  Great Falls scored in each of the 4 innings played and secured an 8-0 victory.  Glori Cheevers and Cheyanne Gleave spread the two hits across the box score, but the Bandits were not able to crack the scoreboard.  Kadi Bateman and Taylor Carpenter each gave up 3 earned runs, with Bateman taking the loss.

Game two was another tough matchup against the Mt. Avalanche.  The Bandits never got the bats going, once again being held to just two hits and zero runs.  Held hitless through 4 innings, Kadi Bateman finally busted through with a single and Dee Koeppen doubled, moving Bateman to 3rd.  However, that was the end of the rally as Avalanche pitcher Kaylee Rosenbaum pitched her way out of the jam to finalize a 0-5 loss for the Bandits.   Shelby Salois pitched a solid game, giving up just 3 earned runs through 4 2/3 innings and striking out 8 batters, before being relieved by Taylor Carpenter.

Game three finally saw the bats get going for the Bandits in an easy win over the Valley Outlaws.  The Outlaws did come out on fire scoring 3 runs in the first inning.  The Bandits chipped away in the bottom of the inning, startied by a bunt single for Ashlyn Tamietti.  Tamietti then stole 2nd and scored on a Shelby Salois single to right field.  Then the flood gates opened for the Bandits in the 2nd inning when Maddie Kallsen led off with a single and moved to third base when the shortstop failed to handle a ground ball by Maddy Salois.  Salois moved to 2nd on the same error and both girls scored on a ground ball by Shelby Melton.  That was followed with singles by Tamietti, Georgia Robinson, Shelby Salois, Cheevers, Kallsen, Taylor Pavao, and Claire Dormaier to open up an 8-3 lead.  Tamietti led off the next inning with another single and Koeppen walked. Then Bateman and Kallsen reached on errors, scoring Tamietti and Koeppen, followed by Taylor Pavao walk off single to end the game by mercy-rule.  Gleave took the win in the circle with 10Ks and zero earned runs through 4 innings.

Silver bracket play started with a matchup against the Sherwood Park Belles from Calgary.  The Belles got started early with 2 runs in the first inning.  The Bandits answered with 1 run of their own when Tamietti drew a walk, stole 2nd, tagged and went to 3rd on a fly ball by Shelby Salois, and scored on a Robinson double.  They put up 2 more runs in the second when a single by Gleave and another Tamietti walk started it off.  Gleave scored on a Shelby Salois single and Tamietti on a Robinson ground out.  In the 3rd inning Kallsen and Dormaier reached on errors, while Pavao and Carpenter singled.  All four crossed the plate to extend the lead to 7-3.  The Belles got one back in the 4th, but the Bandits took it right back when Kallsen doubled, moved to 3rd on a Maddy Salois single, and scored when Carpenter single up the middle. Shelby Salois got the win, striking out 5 through 4 innings.

The final game was another difficult show down with the Calgary Kaisen.  The Kaisen put up 5 unanswered runs in four innings.  In the 4th inning the Bandits got something going with 3 straight hits by Tamietti, Shelby Salois, and Robinson, but failed to score.  Finally in the sixth inning the Bandits busted up the shutout when Tamietti reached on an error and moved to 2nd on a passed ball.  Robinson then grounded out and Tamietti scored when the first baseman threw the ball away in an attempt at a double play to third.  Gleave and Carpenter split time in the circle with Gleave taking the loss.

Not our best outing, but the girls showed great spirit through it all, continuing to make us proud to coach them.  Next tournament is the Summer Sizzler in Selah July 15-16.

Go Bandits!!!
