Jul 27, 2015 - 3rd District Quarter-Final Place Booked

Congratulations to Luke and Rose (Magdalen Park) for booking their place in the District Mixed Pairs Quarter-Final following the concession by their opponents when one of them could not find their bowls... strange, but true!

Jul 26, 2015 - Surrey Unbadged Singles Final - Oh So Close!

This afternoon saw Jonathan play the Surrey Unbadged Singles Final at Croydon against Horley. After a strong start which saw Jonathan lead 8 - 2, his opponent rallied winning the next seven ends to leave Jonathan 8 - 11 behind. Further tidy bowling from both players saw Jonathan 20 - 14 ahead and holding all four shots when his opponent snuck in with his final bowl to save the match; a few ends later and the game was level at 20 - 20. With Jonathan's first bowl he knocked his opponent right on to the jack but managed to knock him off with his third bowl. With his opponent having bowled all of his bowls Jonathan was still one shot down but managed to draw the shot with his final bowl to win the 28 end marathon game and with it the Surrey title! A big THANK YOU to Barry, Cherry and Martin, who spent a wet Sunday cheering Jonathan on, along with those who sent their good wishes before the match began.

Jul 25, 2015 - A Great Taster Session Followed by a Tough League Match

This morning's taster session was the first under the Mayor of London's FreeSport programme and saw an amazing 17 people on the green enjoying the sunny weather and the good company. At the end of the morning we welcomed our 14th new club member this year Anne S and look forward to getting to know her over the coming weeks and months.

This afternoon we hosted South London to the green as we played the latest of the club's league matches. The first half of each game was close with Cherry, George, Sabrina and Barry 10 - 14 down after 12 ends. Dropping a six on the 18th end took the game out of reach with South London eventually winning 27 - 16. Helen, Anne B, Pete and Martin faired better with a strong second half performance turning a level 10 - 10 score after 11 ends into a 24 - 19 win. Hector, Betty, Vernon and Neil also found themselves level at 10 - 10 after 11 ends but the second half went to South London including a great conversion shot which saw Wimbledon Park go from 5 shots up to 6 shots down with one bowl! Final score 15 - 27. Match result 2 - 8 (55 shots to 73).

Jul 23, 2015 - 3rd Bowler Through to the Last 16...

Congratulations to Barry who became the third Wimbledon Park bowler through to the last 16 of the District Men's Singles, following his game this evening at home to Streatham Park. Barry played tidily throughout, consistently drawing to the jack to put his opponent under pressure. In a high quality game, Barry also converted well when he found himself shot down, earning his place in round 3 with a 21 - 4 win.

Jul 21, 2015 - What an Exciting Game!

This evening, Helen (playing for an injured Sabrina), Barry and Neil played away at Wandilea in the District Bill Simpson Mixed Triples. Playing on a very quick and tricky rink the game was close throughout with the opposition skip saving Wandilea from dropping shots on a number of occasions. At the end of the 18 ends, each side had won 9 ends and the scores were locked at 13 - 13. On the extra end after both leads and twos had played WPBC were two shots down, but pushing up our own bowl gave us shot with three bowls left. The situation remained the same with just one bowl left to be played; the Wandilea skip appeared to bowl too wide and his bowl played into one of our bowls which was just under a yard down, pushing it up for second bowl where it sat about 6 inches from the jack, however his own bowl spun off and ran on to become shot bowl, beating the WPBC bowl by an inch. A great game, which went right down to the wire!

Jul 20, 2015 - Two Tough District Competitions

This afternoon Vanessa (Mitcham) and Neil played away at Southey in the Dictrict Mixed Pairs Competition. Having lost the first 4 ends to singles they bounced back to take the lead, a lead which changed hands no less than five times during the game. By 15 ends Vanessa/Neil had built up a lead of 14 shots to 7, only for their opponents to pick up six shots without reply to close the gap. Dropping a four on the 20th end gave their opponents a two shot lead; with their opponents holding shots on the final end Neil managed to 'no end' the jack and on the replayed end a four saw Vanessa and Neil through to the next round after a very close game.

This evening Barry, Vernon, Martin and Neil played Heathfield in the District Fours Competition. After a delayed start in which Heathfield very kindly agreed to wait to start the game, it was Heathfield who started well leading 7 - 2 after 5 ends. By 11 ends however WPBC had taken the lead at 10 - 8, only for their opponents to level once again at 15 ends. Unfortunately for Wimbledon Park their visitors won four of the final five played ends to win 21 - 13.
