Apr 22, 2018 - Senior Ladies Make It Two From Two

Ladies Division 3: Maguiresbridge 2-4 v 9-8 Belcoo

Belcoo Ladies made it two from two with a 9-8 to 2-4 victory in Maguiresbridge amid monsoon conditions at times. The game was blown up a bit early due to injury to a home player, we wish her a speedy recovery. The O’Rahilly’s had began slowly but by the interval they had powered away from the hosts playing some great football as they took a firm grip of the contest.

Collette Rice plays a forward pass in this evenings victory

The visitors had the ball in the net within 60seconds as good interplay between Crona Higgins and Donna Feeley created an opening for Linda McGovern who thumped in an excellent goal. McGovern was to slot over a point following a good interception in defence by Rachel O’Dolan but the tide turned as the home team got up the field and registered two goals and a point for 2-1 to 1-1 with just 7minutes on the clock.

Belcoo began to find their rhythm after the concession of these quick scores. Michelle Cullen fielding a great high ball from a Courtney Ray kickout. The ball was worked to Seana Feeley who carried it 30yards before slipping in sister Donna for a neat point.

A good turnover by Seana Feeley paved the way for Linda McGovern to hit her second goal and give her side the lead at 2-2 to 2-1. From this juncture, the O’Rahilly’s began to dominate all areas of the field.

Donna Feeley claimed the next kickout, feed Collette Rice who advance towards goal and found the top right corner. Donna Feeley and Linda McGovern added points with Rice netting another well taken goal after a quickly taken free from McGovern. 4-4 to 2-1 by the midway stage in the half.

Belcoo were well on top but in sporadic Maguiresbridge attacks, Leona McNulty and Rachel O’Dolan came out with possession, using it well to set up the next attack. Aoife Keaney at wing back went on a long run to slot over a point while great work by Michelle Cullen created a goal for Collette Rice. Rice was to hit her fourth, again a sublime finish on 21minutes after the two Feeley’s and Emma McNulty had kept the ball well in the lead up to the three pointer.

Crona Higgins moves out of the defence with possession

Donna Feeley fired in a quick 1-1, the point coming following strong defensive play by Leona McNulty before Cullen carried downfield and through a number of tackles. Linda McGovern finished another goal but over the closing few moments of the first half Aoife Keaney was sin-bined. Maguiresbridge added a point and had a few more chances for scores. Courtney Ray denied a goal with McNulty and O’Dolan standing firm. Half time. 8-6 to 2-2 in Belcoo’s favour.

The second period was cut short due to a serious injury to a Maguiresbridge player. Before the accidental collision Seana Feeley had registered a goal after a long run while Linda McGovern slotted over a free with Donna Feeley also pointing.

Team (11 a side). Courtney Ray, Leona McNulty, Rachel O’Dolan, Michelle Cullen, Aoife Keaney (0-1), Crona Higgins, Collette Rice (4-0), Seana Feeley (1-0), Donna Feeley (1-4), Linda McGovern (3-3), Emma McNulty. Subs Tara Feeley and Kira McGovern.

Apr 22, 2018 - Recap - U12 Blitz

The sun shone for the under 12s first outing of the season when they travelled to Kinawley on Saturday to play the group stage of the league in a blitz. A young and inexperienced side found themselves punching above their weight as they played four games facing opposition from stronger Kinawley, Derrylin, Bellanaleck and Enniskillen sides.

U12 Squad at the Blitz in Kinawley

Despite this there was hard work all round from the young O’Rahilly’s who showed steady improvement with each game. There were some fine individual performances with scores produced by Michael Burns, Rhys Ray, Matthew Whitmore, Nathan McGovern and Lisa Lavery while Ciara Parker , Jack O’Connor and Caireann McGrath saw plenty of ball linking passages of play.

Eyes on the prize as Cairenn McGrath looks to make a tackle

Emilie McCallion, Lily-Mae McNulty and Megan Maguire were lively in attack along with Daithi McAloon  and Conor Whitmore in support.  Finn Maes made an excellent debut as a midfielder and Serena McKeown, Shay Killilea and Kayce Sweeney got stuck in and applied pressure in defence with the ever reliable Aodhan Cullen in goals. Overall they played with great spirit which was encouraging…. Just need to keep up the skills practice boys and girls!

Training continues Tuesday 24th April from 6.30pm to 7.45pm

Apr 21, 2018 - Recap - U14 Girls Feile

Belcoo U14 Girls were to compete at the Fermanagh Feile in Derrygonnelly on a glorious Saturday afternoon but it would be Kinawley who advance to represent the County at National Level.

They saved their best for last with a 5-6 to 0-1 win over the hosts but earlier defeats to Enniskillen Gaels, 3-1 to 0-2 and Kinawley 5-4 to 0-0 seen them exit the competition.

Niamh McAloon in action against Kinawley

In the opening game against a physically strong and tall Enniskillen side Belcoo worked the first scoring opportunity, a good flowing move ended with Mikayla Maguire moving in one on one with the keeper but her shot was directly at the keeper. Enniskillen were to work the ball downfield for a well taken goal.

It was a laboured first half but Niamh Cullen, Rhianne McGuinness and Siofra McAloon were going well. Enniskillen had tagged on a point while the O’Rahilly’s registered two wides and dropped two more into the keepers hands.

The second half seen a bit more improvement but with Enniskillen registering two more goals the game was up. Sinead Barrett would slot over two second half points for her side.

Scarlett O'Connor drives past a challenge from Eimear Keaney of Enniskillen

Onto Kinawley and it was a much better display, more intensity and hunger showed by the O’Rahilly’s. Kinawley, in full forward Keelan Murphy possess a superb footballer and she would end up with a big score for herself in this tie, banging in all but one score.

Belcoo were trying hard with captain Niamh McAloon driving the side on from midfielder. McGuinness and Eimear Magee were to the fore in the defensive while up top, scores were hard to come by. It was 1-2 to no score at the interval before Kinawley pressed on for a comfortable win in the second half. Belcoo again had chances for scores, a strong run by Sam Martin created a good opening for Rachel Nolan who fired wide.

Mikayla Maguire claims a good ball against Derrygonnelly

In the final contest Belcoo had re-gigged things, Cara Gray now operating in the forward line made some great bursts through and was rewarded with a goal on 4 minutes. By then Scarlett O’Connor had clipped over a fine score while Sinead Barrett also slotted over after Abbie McGovern had done well.

Ciara Nolan came out with a good ball down the left to create the next score for Sinead Barrett who pointed before she was to add another goal. At the interval it was 1-4 to no score, Eve Barrett getting time and space to run through and clip over a neat score.

Sinead Barrett registered an early goal in the second half, Scarlett O’Connor clipped over another nice point while good pressure from a number of our forwards forced the keeper to carry the ball over the line for a goal.

Ciara McGuinness and Eimear Magee combined for the latter to finish with her right foot while Magee later added a point and Sinead Barrett netted the final score.

Overall, good experience was gained and a look at sides who will be met later in the year at U14 level were viewed. There were steady showing across the three games by Rhianne McGuinness, Niamh Cullen and Niamh McAloon.

Next outing is for the Under 16 Girls away in Ederney on Monday evening. Bus leaving 5.30pm.

Team. Riona Keaney, Siofra McAloon, Cara Gray (1-0), Ciara McGuinness, Rhianne McGuinness, Eimear Magee (1-1), Niamh Cullen, Niamh McAloon, Sam Martin, Sinead Barrett (2-4), Rachel Nolan, Ciara Nolan, Eve Barrett (0-1), Mikayla Maguire, Scarlett O’Connor (0-2), Abbie McGovern, Eimear Gray.

Apr 17, 2018 - U16s Beat Lisnaskea On A Wild Night

U16 Division 3: Lisnaskea 2-2 v 7-9 Belcoo

Belcoo Under 16 Girls returned from Lisnaskea on what was a wild winters evening with a 7-9 to 2-2 victory to make it two wins from two outings this season.

There was a savage crossfield gale blowing which made life difficult for both sides in this pretty scrappy contest. The hosts were to dominate the opening ten minutes but knocked over just one score while registering four wides. Belcoo eventually got to grips with things as they began to turn the kickouts with Sam Martin, Siofra McAloon and Ciana McGrath claiming restarts.

No way out as a Lisnaskea defender is surrounded by Abbie McGovern, Eve Barrett & Roina Keaney

The O’Rahilly’s had played second fiddle to the host but they worked their first score on 7minutes to take the lead. Scarlett O’Connor, who’d a great hour, snapped onto a loose ball on the left wing and found Aine Barrett who fisted the ball off to the onrushing Sinead Barrett who fired to the net.

Belcoo would clip over two points in as many minutes through Sinead Barrett and Scarlett O’Connor before they netted for a second time. Barrett this time running in along the byline and drilling low past the keeper.

A patient bit of good interplay by Ciana McGrath and Aine Barrett seen possession recycled to Sinead Barrett who split the posts once more. 2-3 to 0-1 by the midway stage of the half.

The visitors were now going well although Lisnaskea still created openings at the other end, fortunately for the O’Rahilly’s the radar was off as they missed the target however there was good pressure applied by Ciara Nolan and Cara Gray when forwards were getting shots away.

Belcoo worked their best move of the night on 21minutes to register a fabulous goal. Eimear Magee took a sideline ball on the left to Scarlett O’Connor, she carried the ball into the final third and a quick transfer through the hands from O’Connor and Aine Barrett to Ciana McGrath seen the wing forward cut across the 21yard line and rifle an unstoppable shot into the top right corner.

Aoife Keaney was to claim a kickout shortly afterwards and drive towards goal before slotting the ball past the keeper while Lisnaskea registered the last score of the half to leave it 4-3 to 0-2 in Belcoo’s favour at half time.

Belcoo wrapped things up with a blistering first 8minutes of the second half where they added 2-5 to their tally. Aine Barrett did well to setup Ciana McGrath for the opening point of the half. Sinead Barrett swiftly added another before she raced in for a goal after Sam Martin had did really well in the build up.

Ciana McGrath claimed a good kickout, fed Scarlett O’Connor who split the posts again. It was rolls reversed 60seconds later as O’Connor claimed the kickout, fed McGrath and she blasted the ball to the top left corner. Aine and Sinead Barrett added points with Sinead hitting a three pointer after a 40yard solo run. 7-8 to 0-2.

At this stage the entire O’Rahilly’s bench were involved. Abbie McGovern got on some great ball over the closing 20 minutes and used it well to create a score for Riona Keaney. Eve Barrett was her lively self with Ciara McGuinness getting stuck in and Niamh Cullen stepped up another notch with her impressive performance in the closing quarter.

Lisnaskea would score two goals in the final 10minutes but there was some good goalkeeping by Mikayla Maguire, pressure and strong defending from Cara Gray while Niamh McAloon continued to work tireless with Ciana McGrath and Sam Martin in the middle third.

Up next is an away trip to Ederney on Monday 23rd April. Training continues Wednesday from 7pm to 8.15pm.

Team (14 a side).
