Nov 18, 2018 - Senior Ladies Lose Ruth McGrath Semi Final

RUTH McGRATH CUP SEMI FINAL: St. Pat's 0-10 v 2-1 Belcoo

The Senior Ladies suffered a three point defeat in the Ruth McGrath Cup Semi Final at the weekend. It was a below par display from the O’Rahilly’s who never really hit the heights of other matches this season over the course of the hour despite a promising opening 7minutes that seen them hit an early 1-1, they could only muster one more score in the game, a second half goal from Collette Rice.

Despite the lack of scores, they remained just one kick of the ball from their opponents during the remainder of the game. A well struck shot from Donna Feeley with the last attack of the game almost levelled the contest but a fine stop on the goal-line denied the extra time.

The bulk of the scores in the game came in the first ten minutes, St. Pat’s had 4points registered while Belcoo had their goal and point. Collette Rice knocking over the point from the left wing while Tina Gallagher netted the goal after Aine Barrett had did very well in the build up.

The O’Rahilly’s laboured a bit after this and St. Pat’s began to win the majority of the individual battles throughout the field. The home side could squander some great chances for scores, to their credit, some good pressure was applied by the Belcoo defence forcing shots off target. St. Pat’s though would hit three in a row to hold a 0-7 to 1-1 half time lead.

Belcoo began the second half with a bit more hunger. The strong running of Lisa Stewart drove the side on with Aine Barrett continuing to link play well while Crona Higgins had a great second half. Defensively Belcoo tightened up and only gave up three points in the 30minutes, there were some heart in the mouth moments at the back as bodies were thrown in front of the ball to keep efforts out.

At the other end, scores were hard to come by. A great move down the left yielded the goal by Rice while moments later Donna Feeley had the ball in the net but it was ruled off for a very very soft free out.

Belcoo never stopped working and they tried and pressed really hard in the closing 10minutes despite being down a player. Half chances and promising openings came and went as the goal the craved to tie the match never materialised.

St. Pat’s will meet Ederney in the Final. Belcoo’s attention now turns to the League Promotion Playoff, they play Knockninny while Enniskillen meet Belnaleck. The two winners will play a Final for promotion to Division 2.

Team (13 a side): Linda McGovern, Leona McNulty, Crona Higgins, Joan Rice, Michelle Cullen, Arlene Furey, Eimear Higgins, Lisa Stewart, Tina Gallagher (1-0), Collette Rice (1-1), Aine Barrett, Donna Feeley, Amanda McGrath. Subs Used: Tamara Dolan, Aoife Keaney.

Nov 13, 2018 - Review of 2018 Fixtures Calendar & Competition Structures

As part of the GAA’s Club Fixtures Strategy, each County has been asked (by Ard Chomhairle & Central Fixtures Analysis Committee) to facilitate a club forum to both review their 2018 calendar and competition structures, and make recommendations for change, if deemed necessary, for 2019.

Fermanagh GAA have produced an online survey (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FermanaghGAA) to maximise the opportunities for players (club and county), members and stakeholders of the GAA in the county to provide their views, comments and suggestions on these topics.

We are also holding a County Committee meeting next Monday 19th November, where this issue will be discussed at length with delegates from each club in Fermanagh.

We would be grateful if you could circulate this survey widely and complete it before it closes at 4pm this Saturday 17th November 2018.

It will only take a few minutes of your time and it is intended to lead to a more informed discussion next Monday evening and to better decision making in the future.

The survey can be completed by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FermanaghGAA

Nov 11, 2018 - Senior Ladies Into Cup Semi Final

Belcoo Senior Ladies advanced to the Semi Final of the Ruth McGrath Cup with a good showing against and understrength Knockninny at MacNean Park on Sunday morning. The legend that is Tina Gallagher hitting six first half goals in her taped up pink boots to help her side into a commanding lead. The O’Rahilly’s played some good football throughout and finished up comfortable winners on a 12-10 to 5-1 scoreline.

Belcoo were on the front foot from the outset. Michelle Cullen winning the ball in the middle of the field, offloading to Lisa Stewart who pinged a great kickpass into Collette Rice who turned and fired over the first score of the contest. Arlene Furey was to the fore around the middle sector and she won the next kickout before playing the ball into the right corner for Rice to gather and net her first of five goals.

The O’Rahilly’s had penned back the visitors and the excellent Aine Barrett made a great turnover on the left wing before sending Tina Gallagher in for a point. Knockninny though would register a goal with their first attack on 6minutes when Molly Flanagan powered downfield and finished well. 1-2 to 1-0 the score.

A good kickout from Chloe Dolan seen Belcoo gain possession and work the ball in close to goals for a free kick, Lisa Stewart knocked over the placed ball while Seana Feeley drove down the middle moments later and fed Aine Barrett, her shot from distance struck the post but it was Barrett who was first to react and made no mistake splitting the posts from the left wing at the second attempt.

Tina Gallagher would register her first goal of the half when Donna Feeley had done well to create the chance. Knockninny though would respond with a goal of their own on 13minutes for a 2-4 to 2-0 scoreline. The visitors looked dangerous in the next passage of play but Leona McNulty won a ball she’d no right to get to and Belcoo were back in action.

The winners were on fire in front of goal for the next 11minutes, they registered 7 goals. The first was probably the best team move of the day. Aine Barrett made a turnover and a quick bit of fist passing between herself, Collette Rice and Arlene Furey seen the later play a good ball inside to Gallagher who made no mistake in front of goals. Collette Rice won a free on the right wing seconds later and a long ball into Gallagher seen her cleverly fist the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper. 4-4 to 2-0 with 16minutes played.

Belcoo kept the pressure on and continued to be clinical in front of goals. Seana Feeley robbed her player and after a quick one-two with Barrett she dinked a great kickpass through to Rice who coolly fired into the top corner. Tina Gallagher set Rice away for another well taken goal before Gallagher rattled three in three minutes for a 9-4 to 2-0 lead. Donna Feeley, Lisa Stewart and Collette Rice with the assists.

Knockninny would hit their third goal but Belcoo found two points from the boot of Collette Rice after some more hard work from Aine Barrett and Seana Feeley in the build up. Half time 9-6 to 3-0.

Knockninny made a bright start to the second period with a quickfire 1-1 but Belcoo soon shut up shop at the back. Aoife Keaney and Leona McNulty would win everyball went in their way over the closing 25minutes. Michelle Cullen was going about her business in her usually impressive manner with Arlene Furey continuing to cut out ball and power forward down the left.

The O’Rahilly’s first point of the half was a full length move, Aoife Keaney beating her opposite number to the ball in the left corner back spot, a good ball out of the defence found the hard working Lisa Stewart, who got through a mountain of work over the hour, she carried the ball upfield, Stewart kicked into Aine Barrett who slipped it to Tina Gallagher and the point was registered.

Collette Rice was to jink in for a fourth goal when Donna Feeley and Aine Barrett had done well to retrieve the ball while Lisa Stewart was then fouled and kicked the resulting free from distance. 10-8 to 4-1 with 20minutes to play.

Belcoo rang the changes, Ciana McGrath was quickly involved and a good run seen the ball eventually worked into Donna Feeley who rattled the net. Joan Rice got on some good ball in midfield with Tamara Dolan slotting into the defence.

Over the closing quarter Collette Rice would hit another goal while there were points for Aine Barrett and a free from Joan Rice completed the scoring.

Belcoo will now meet St. Pat’s in the Cup Semi Final while they will meet Knockninny in the League Semi Final soon too. Details will be released when known, training continues on Tuesday and Thursday at the Football Field from 7pm.

11 a side: Chloe Dolan, Leona McNulty, Aoife Keaney, Arlene Furey, Michelle Cullen, Seana Feeley, Lisa Stewart (0-2), Collette Rice (5-3), Tina Gallagher (6-2), Donna Feeley (1-0), Aine Barrett (0-2). Subs Ciana McGrath, Joan Rice (0-1), Tamara Dolan.
