Feb 17, 2019 - Cleenish U19 Boys Make Winning Start
U19 Boys Division 2: Brookeborough 4-14 v 7-6 Cleenish
Cleenish had their first outing in the U19 competition on Sunday 17 February. Despite the difficult playing conditions this time of year, all involved acquitted themselves very well. Supported by a strong wind in the first half, we went into the half time break leading by 3 points following some superb scores from Shane Doherty and Ronan McGurn.
In the second half we continued in the same vein with the attitude, application and effort excellent throughout. A particular mention to our defence in the second half which was superbly led by Emmett McGuinness and Dara Flanagan. Daire Hill put in a big shift in the middle of the field providing a stable platform to attack from. Ronan McGurn was a constant thorn in the side of the Brookboro defence with his ball winning and hard running at the defence. He was ably assisted by Oisin Monaghan in particular in the second half.
Overall, it was a good start to season and we look forward to putting in a big effort over to coming weeks to prepare for our next competitive match. The time of year must be taken into consideration and given the time of year, all of our players showed tremendous desire and hard work to get the result.
Training Tuesday and Thursday for all panel members at 7.30. It’s important that everyone attends and helps with our push to get the year started well.

Feb 17, 2019 - Loads of Positives from Ladies First Challenge Game
SENIOR LADIES CHALLENGE: Belcoo 3-14 v 4-6 Erne Gaels
The Senior Ladies had a great workout with Erne Gaels at a blustery MacNean Park this morning in what was a first challenge game of the new season. The O’Rahilly’s 3-14 to 4-6 victors however its all about building fitness, getting some game time under the belts and integrating new faces into the side. Overall it was an encouraging and positive hour which gives management a solid foundation to build from.
It took both sides a while to settle and adjust to their first game in months, the whirling wind making life difficult but having struck the post with a shot on 6minutes, Amanda McGrath got on the end of the rebound to land the first point of the contest. Collette Rice landed the next two from play, the second probably should have been a goal, blazing over from close range but she made no mistake when netting a few minutes later, drilling low to the net for 1-3 to no score on 13minutes.
Belcoo were winning the kick outs and any breaking balls to pin back Erne Gaels. Stacey McCabe, Lisa Stewart and Ciana McGrath getting hands on several ball around the middle sector. Donna Kerr was spreading the play well with Kelly Connolly showing on the wing and making good use of possession. Aoife Keaney created the next score for Rice to pop over another point while a one two between Rice and Katie McManus on the left yielded another. Belcoo 1-6 to no score up with 20minutes on the clock.
Erne Gaels were battling hard but until this juncture the Belcoo defence, lead by Leona McNulty, were first to all balls into that area. Tamara Dolan and Arlene Furey were letting nothing past them down either channel at wing back. The visitors who hit two points either side of an Amanda McGrath effort while both sides had goal chances. Aoife Keaney driving in from the left but she was thwarted by the keeper while at the other end Linda McGovern was sharply off her line to narrow the angle as an Erne Gaels forward drove wide. Niamh McAloon on her first appearance for the adult team, doing enough to put off the forward also.
The hardworking Stacey McCabe and sister Kelly Connolly combined well with Lisa Stewart to set up a Collette Rice point, Erne Gaels replied but on the stroke of half time, sisters Donna Kerr and Amanda McGrath worked a short free kick, Lisa Stewart came off the shoulder to take possession and a long range effort dipped under the bar for a goal. Half time 2-7 to 0-3.
The wind, whilst swirling wildly all over the place, was helping Erne Gaels in the second half, they soon cut the deficit to three points having hit two goals and a point in the 10mins at the start of the second half. 2-7 to 2-4.
Belcoo had been struggling to get out of their own half, Ciana McGrath however stepped up to claim 3 kickouts with good runs to give Linda McGovern an option. Kelly Connolly reminded an outlet on the right side for McGrath when she won the ball, with Stacey McCabe and Lisa Stewart driving through the middle as Belcoo re-established control of the game.
Arlene Furey made an excellent turnover in the build up to Belcoo’s first score of the second half. The accurate Collette Rice registering the score. Rice, was on fine form in front of the sticks and she added the next point before a sweeping forward move seen her break through one on one to coolly finish to the net. 3-9 to 2-5 with 15mins to play. Erne Gaels would respond with a goal but over the final 10mins, Belcoo finished the fixture strongly.
They began to cut open the Erne Gaels defence with slick interplay. Ciana McGrath starting many moves having read the Erne Gaels restarts. Collette Rice started the run of scores from a free having been fouled herself. Lisa Stewart landed points from tight angles on both the right and left side while Chloe Dolan slotted over a score and Collette Rice finished the home scoring with another.
Erne Gaels would add 1-1 in stoppage time but Belcoo were worthy winners on 3-14 to 4-6 scoreline. We thank Erne Gaels for the game and wish them well for their season.
Training continues Monday & Wednesday at 7pm in the Field with a session in KC Fitness on Thursday at 7pm. The O’Rahilly’s host Enniskillen Gaels next Sunday morning in another challenge.
