May 27, 2018 - Senior Ladies Back To Winning Ways

Senior Ladies Division 3: Belcoo 10-21 v 2-7 Maguiresbridge

Belcoo Ladies returned to winning ways with a comprehensive victory over Maguiresbridge on a glorious Sunday evening at MacNean Park. The O’Rahilly’s were to dominate from the opening moments as they surged to a large interval lead. Maguiresbridge to their credit battled gamely throughout and were rewarded for their efforts with some good scores in the second half.

Belcoo began brightly and played some excellent football across the hour, moving the ball swiftly upfield with some neat kickpassing and interplay before taking their chances in front of goal. It all began inside a minute when Linda McGovern gathered possession, slipped it to the supporting Amanda McGrath who swung over a fine point. Within a minute McGrath had another on the board, Leona McNulty getting a good hand in at the back before the excellent Michelle Cullen picked out McGrath for the score.

Collette Rice tagged on her first of the game after some soccer style wizardry from Tina Gallagher on the left wing and Belcoo would then hit their opening goal, Joan Rice with a superb ball into Linda McGovern, before she turned and rifled a fine strike low into the left corner. Seana Feeley won possession minutes later and drove in for a goal while Linda McGovern tapped over a free following a foul on Amanda McGrath.

By the 10th minute the O’Rahilly’s had two more points on the board for a 2-6 total, Tina Gallagher and Michelle Cullen the scorers. Maguiresbridge managed to gain a wee foothold in proceedings to stem the wave of attacks but at the other end of the field Aoibhinn Gallagher and Leona McNulty were proving impossible to get past. Both Ladies turning over several attacks with well timed tackles while they won other foot races to loose passes. Crona Higgins was getting through plenty of work at half back with Michelle Cullen continuing to produce some excellent football.

Good interplay by the Rice sisters Collette and Joan created a point for Linda McGovern while some great showing and a good catch on the right by Amanda McGrath seen her set up Collette Rice for a well taken score. McGrath would slot over the next two points from play before the home side netted a third goal, Tina ‘Messi’ Gallagher dribbling in for a soccer style goal. Collette Rice was to pop another point and with 20minutes on the clock it was now 3-11 to no score.

By half time Belcoo were up to 6-17. Linda McGovern with two goals and a point while Tina Gallagher hit a goal and three points in this period. Joan Rice completed the scoring in the half with a neat point from the right wing while Maguiresbridge did muster a goal and point in the final five minutes of the half to leave it 6-17 to 1-1 at the interval.

The second period seen the Belcoo hit 4-4 to Maguiresbridge 1-6. The hosts seen Lana Shiels, Kira McGovern and Patrice Murray all get good game time while Collette Rice came to the fore in the scoring front, rattling a hat trick of goals, again, all these placed beyond the reach of the keeper after good build up play by team mates. Joan Rice applying the other three pointer while a hardworking display by Crona Higgins was capped with a great point and Michelle Cullen, who never stopped driving up and down the field for the hour, landed a point with Linda McGovern popping two more.

There was some good tackling, blocks and several fine moves over the course of the game while a tough hour in hot conditions will do the general fitness no harm at all. Training continues Tuesday & Thursday at 7pm. Next weekend Belcoo go to Erne Gaels in the 9 a side for 6pm on Sunday 3rd June.

Team (11 a side) Courtney Ray, Leona McNulty, Aoibhinn Gallagher, Crona Higgins (0-1), Michelle Cullen (0-2), Joan Rice (1-1) , Seana Feeley (1-0), Collette Rice (3-3), Tina Gallagher (2-4), Amanda McGrath (0-4), Linda McGovern (3-6). Subs Lana Shiels, Patrice Murray, Emma McNulty.
