Jul 18, 2018 - U17s Off To A Flier In High Scoring Win

U17 Division 3: Brookeboro 4-5 v 6-21 Belcoo

The Under 17 Boys got off to a flying start in Brookeboro this evening as they recorded a 6-21 to 4-5 victory playing some great football. It was an all round team display with hard work from each man as they won all sectors of the field. Passages of simple football cut the home defence wide open at times as a clinical O’Rahilly’s side hit some superb scores.

The hosts would open the scoring with a point and looked lively in the first few minutes before the returning Daniel O’Connor and the ever improving Ben McNulty stopped their man getting any real touches of the ball after this.

The O’Rahilly’s took 3minutes to open their account. The midfield pairing of Oisin O’Loughlin and Oran McCann bossed that area throughout, the pair combined with Lawrence McKeown who set marauding wing back Emmett McGuinness up for the opening score. O’Loughlin was to claim the next kickout and play a long diagonal ball into Josh Killilea who fed the supporting Cian White, he offloaded to McGuinness and Belcoo had the lead.

White had a good hour and he claimed the next kickout, fed Lawrence McKeown and he pointed from distance before McKeown ran in for a 6th minute goal after good work from O’Loughlin in the middle again. Brookeboro would respond with a goal of their own but Belcoo would dominate the remainder of the half as they clicked into gear, hitting some well worked scores.

Lawrence McKeown knocked over two good points off both feet either side of Oran McCann slotting over having worked a short 45 with Cian White. Belcoo illustrated how simple the game of football is with a 12th minute goal. Jamie Ray’s long kick to the middle of the field was marked by Oisin O’Loughlin, he turned and sprayed a one bounce pass into Josh Killilea, O’Loughlin followed his pass to take the ball back from Killilea, he popped a fist pass through to the overlapping Patrick Martin who smartly finished to the net. 2-6 to 1-1 at this juncture.

Brookeboro would hit a point but another simple score was registered by Belcoo, Ray’s kickout claimed by McKeown this time in midfield, he sent Patrick Martin scampering away with a racking pass for a well taken point. Emmett McGuinness would create a point for McKeown before the wing back chipped the keeper for a third Belcoo goal. It was all Belcoo at this stage, O’Loughlin snapped onto a break, fed Killilea who breezed past his man for a first point of the night.

Coming to half time Brookeboro ventured forward but they were met twice with superb blocks by Ben McNulty and Gerry Nolan. Elsewhere Conor McKeown was brave to a break ball that set his side up for their next score, brother Lawrence the score taker before he netted a great goal, powering through and finding the top left corner. Cian White would claim another kickout coming to half time to set McKeown up for a point while Killilea created a score for Oisin O’Loughlin before the interval. Half time 4-12 to 1-3.

Some points were added early in the half, McKeown (3) and Martin (2) before a period of sloppy play for 10minutes allowed Brookeboro back into with two goals before the ship was steadied. Daniel O’Connor sharply onto a ball he’s no right to win and gain a free. Belcoo worked the ball upfield from the free, Oran McCann, Gerry Nolan and Oisin O’Loughlin involved before Emmett McGuinness netted.

O’Loughlin followed up with a free after Nolan was fouled while the Brookeboro keeper came from his goals, miss-hit his clearance under pressure from Jack Greene, the ball came to McGuinness who lobbed the keeper from 35yards as he ran back to his goals.

In the latter stages, two more Patrick Martin points and one from Josh Killilea rounded off the scoring on a good night for the sky blues. Training continues Sunday at 2pm before a home game on Wednesday with Ederney, throw in 7.30pm.

Team (13 a side). Jamie Ray, Daniel O’Connor, Ben McNulty, Emmett McGuinness (3-2), Gerry Nolan, Conor McKeown, Oran McCann (0-1), Oisin O’Loughlin (0-2), Cian White, Lawrence McKeown (2-9), Patrick Martin (1-5), Josh Killilea (0-2), Jack Greene.

Jul 17, 2018 - Spirited Display From Belcoo as Kinawley Remain Unbeaten

U14 Girls Division 1: Belcoo 3-3 v 5-7 Kinawley

The Under 14 girls put up a spirited display against an unbeaten Kinawley side, fresh from claiming their All Ireland Feile title, at MacNean Park this evening, the visitors running out 5-7 to 3-3 winners.

There was excellent defensive displays by the young O’Rahilly’s, one occasion in the opening half seen five blocks in 30seconds deny Kinawley a score. Kinawley were to make the early running and had two deflected goals on the scoreboard inside 8minutes. Belcoo were under plenty of pressure but Riona Keaney was in great form between the sticks, her kickouts first class with some mighty sweeper keeper work to prevent a few more goals.

The excellent Mikayla Maguire makes a break upfield having won possession

The full back line had a tremendous game from start to finish, Siofra McAloon strong under pressure when claiming back possession and making some super distributions of the ball. Ciara McGuinness likewise was quick to cut out any danger while standing her opponent up well. Rhianne McGuinness had the unenviable task of curtailing the talented Keelan Murphy, McGuinness has a great game in doing that while also foraging upfield on occasions.

Mikayla Maguire at wing back was strong and powerful having grown as the game progressed, she was the driving force throughout the second half for her side. Elsewhere Scarlett O’Connor and Eve Barrett were the outlets on two wings with Ciara Nolan having a very good second half at centre forward.

Ciara Nolan makes a break with Abbie McGovern supporting

Kinawley had 2-6 on the board before Belcoo scored. Sinead Barrett pointing after a long run coming to half time. Eimear Gray went close with a goal effort, while Eve Barrett and Rachel Nolan seen chances blocked down. Half time 2-6 to 0-1 in Kinawley’s favour.

Belcoo would dominate the ball in the second half. An early goal from Sinead Barrett seen the O’Rahilly’s cut the deficit but Kinawley would hit their third. Belcoo went on to have a few good chances for scores, Kinawley pressured shots and made blocks to deny efforts before Eve Barrett weaved through the defence for a well taken goal.

Ciara Nolan was to hit a wonderful point after some strong and direct running through the visiting defence as she continues to grow in confidence with every game. Abbie McGovern had held firm despite strong attention from her opponent on the left wing as she helped shift the ball infield for Eve Barrett to duke in for a second goal five minutes from time to pull it back to 4-6 to 3-2.

Eve Barrett scoops the ball up and races away from her opponent

Kinawley were to hit the crossbar before slotting over a point but Mikayla Maguire matched the effort with a well taken point after a lung bursting run down the right wing. Kinawley would hit the final score of the game, a fifth goal to maintain their 100% winning record. Belcoo have now finished with 3 wins from their 6 Division 1 games and will likely meet Knockninny in a playoff to see who meets Kinawley in the League Final.

Belcoo play Derrygonnelly on Thursday in a challenge game at the Harps venue, bus leaving 5.30pm.

Team (15 a side). Riona Keaney, Ciara McGuinness, Rhianne McGuinness, Siofra McAloon, Mikayla Maguire (0-1), Eimear Magee, Niamh Cullen, Sinead Barrett (1-1), Cara Gray, Eve Barrett (2-0), Ciara Nolan (0-1), Scarlett O’Connor, Abbie McGovern, Rachel Nolan, Eimear Gray. Jul 14, 2018 - Senior Men Continue Winning Run

Senior League Division 2: Coa 1-13 v 2-18 Belcoo

The Senior Men made it six wins on the spin with a 2-18 to 1-13 success in Coa on Friday evening. The O’Rahilly’s avenging an opening day defeat to the O’Dwyers as they took charge of this contest in the second quarter. It’s good points to get in the race for the top 4 considering half the team will miss next weekends double header.

It was nip and tuck early doors, Belcoo three-one to the good inside 8minutes, Aaron Dolan with two either side of a Jonathan Feeley score. Unfortunately Feeley’s day was a short one, a calf injury that looks quite serious forcing him to off with cousin Conor McAloon entering the fray.

Eoin Donnelly and Lee McQuade had two in the board for the hosts as the sides continued to trade scores. Donnelly’s point was almost a goal but for a fine save by former goalkeeper James McGrath, now playing outfield, who somehow turned the ball over the bar with keeper Gary Doherty beaten. Coa had another goal chance, Doherty though made the save on this occasion.

By the 15th minute it was 0-6 to 0-5 in Belcoo’s favour, Ryan Leonard went on a fine run from corner back to play a few one twos and fire over. Aaron Dolan smartly fisted the ball over the bar coming in from the right wing while James McGrath landed an excellent score from long range. Wing back Luke McQuade had got forward to slot a neat point for the home side with Lee McQuade also finding the target.

Belcoo took a grip of the contest at this juncture, Niall McGovern, Brian Cox and James McGourty doing well in the middle third with Paul McGrath keeping things moving at centre half back.
Paul McGrath would point a free on the left before brother James hit a second long range effort with Aaron Dolan and Conor McAloon clipped over good efforts for a 0-10 to 0-5 scoreline.

As half time approached Lee McQuade popped over a close range free before Belcoo bagged their first goal. A good move down the left with Eoin Shiels and Barry McGovern seen the ball working into the middle for Paul McGrath who broke through, fisted to Niall Cullen who fisted the ball to the net. Half time Coa 0-6 v 1-10 Belcoo.

Upon by restart, after a sloppy three or four minutes Belcoo effectively killed the tie as they hit a second goal. Again a fluid move down the left seen Gerard McHugh play the ball infield to Aaron Dolan who duly applied the three point finish. It was now a ten point game.

For 15 minutes points continued to flow at regular intervals. Dean McDermott (2), James McGourty, Gerard McHugh, Conor McAloon and Aaron Dolan all registered for the O’Rahilly’s while Julian Carters and Lee McQuade kept the scoreboard ticking for Coa. By the 50th minute it was 2-16 to 1-9. Darren McQuade rattling 1-1 in a 60second spell and it was back to a ten point game.

Coa applied some great pressure as they won a lot of the Belcoo restarts, some poor wides would cost them closing the deficit enough to give them a sniff at a late comeback. They would hit three points by the finish, Lee McQuade with two frees and a sideline ball however Aaron Dolan and Paul McGrath rounded off the win for the visitors with the final two scores of the game.

Team. Gary Doherty, Ryan Leonard (0-1), Niall Leonard, Eoin Shiels, Barry McGovern, Paul McGrath (0-2), Dean McDermott (0-2), James McGrath (0-2), James McGourty (0-1), Gerard McHugh (0-1), Niall McGovern, Niall Cullen (1-0), Aaron Dolan (1-6), Jonathan Feeley (0-1), Brian Cox.
