May 13, 2018 - Belnaleck Edge Ladies Game By Single Point

11 a side Division 3: Belcoo 3-9 v 4-7 Belnaleck

The Seniors Ladies would go down by a point in a thrilling 11 a side encounter on a glorious evening at MacNean Park. Belnaleck rallying in the second half to claim the victory on a 4-7 to 3-9 scoreline.

It was a ding dong battle in the second half when the game was in the melting pot, in truth there was never much in it. Belcoo had bossed the opening half but only held a four point lead at the break. A fast start with a fine Michelle Cullen point was followed up with a superbly taken goal by Donna Feeley after Collette Rice had played a good ball into the corner forward.

Leona McNulty made a fabulous turnover on 4 minutes in the defence and Belcoo worked the ball the length of the field for a Linda McGovern point. Belnaleck though were growing into the contest and Shanna Cassidy went on a strong run and thumped in a good goal. She was to follow up with a driven point for 1-2 to 1-1 on 10minutes.

Belcoo though were to impress over the next ten minutes where they rattled over five good scores. Linda McGovern hit two good ones from play while Aisling Keenan did make two good blocks to deny other scores. Donna Feeley raced in from the right wing to clip over a nice one while a strong Seana Feeley run seen Arlene Furey fasten onto a fist pass to knock over a well taken score.

A good block at the back by Rachel O’Dolan seen Belcoo again work a clever move upfield where Collette Rice finished it off with a point. These five points were quickly wiped out though with a well taken goal and two points by the visitors in quick succession.

Belcoo however found a second goal coming to half time. Seana Feeley and Linda McGovern were involved in the build up before Collette Rice placed the ball in the top right corner for a 2-7 to 2-3 half time lead.

Belcoo would go 20minutes without a score in the game, Belnaleck by this stage had established a one point lead, 3-5 to 2-7. Linda McGovern ended the drought for the O'Rahilly's with a free kick to tie matters. It was getting tight and tense by this stage. Every ball fiercely contested, blocks and turnovers galore, cheers for good moments, groans for bad.

Belanleck would edge ahead with a point, Belcoo though responded with a goal from Michelle Cullen as they broke downfield. Within 40seconds, Belnaleck had a goal of their own via Farrah McCloskey to lead again. A point was added and two separated the sides. 4-7 to 3-8.

The closing few minutes seen Belcoo create a number of good scoring opportunities, just one was taken as Collette Rice hit a point from close range. Belnaleck almost sealed the deal with a late goal, Courtney Ray though, made a fine save and cleared the danger. Also with Belcoo pressing forward, Belnaleck broke with a three v one, Rachel O’Dolan was the one and she came out with possession.

Despite one final push by Belcoo, the elusive point required to draw the game didn’t arrive and Belnaleck returned to Arney winners by one.

Training continues Tuesday 7pm.

Team (11 a side) Courtney Ray, Leona McNulty, Rachel O’Dolan, Michelle Cullen (1-1), Aoibhinn Gallagher, Collette Rice (1-2), Crona Feeley, Seana Feeley, Arlene Furey (0-1), Linda McGovern (0-4), Donna Feeley (1-1). Subs used Aoife Keaney, Tina Gallagher.

May 13, 2018 - U15 Boys Lose To Irvinestown

U15 Division 2: Belcoo 1-4 v 6-7 Irvinestown

Belcoo Under 15s suffered a 6-7 to 1-4 defeat at home to an Irvinestown side that have now won all 7 league games. It was a low scoring and tight affair for about 40minutes, Belcoo having defended well in that time but had little going forward to give an overworked backline a breather.

Irvinestown were reduced to 14men in the first half also but despite the numerical advantage Belcoo continued to give away possession unnecessarily. Colum Higgins was the standout performer for the home team, he never stopping running and looking for the ball, he turned over several attacks and carried the ball forward for his side. He’ll be badly missed Wednesday in the final league fixture with Ederney as Belcoo try and force a playoff for a place in the Final.

Josh Killilea also had a fine hour, never giving up the ghost while Gerry Nolan made a multitude of superbly timed tackles, particularly in the opening half, operating at centre half back this afternoon. A few others should take note, that’s how to tackle.

Jamie Ray made a stunning save 60seconds into the encounter. There had been some good play between Higgins, Killilea and Michael Burns to move Belcoo upfield at times before it all broke down. Ben McNulty and Conor McKeown were doing rightly to curtail their players as Irvinestown came forward in waves. 1-3 was all they’d mustered by the 25th minute when they were reduced to 14men for a second booking.

Belcoo eventually raised a white flag, working two points in the 28th & 29th minutes of the half, Emmett McGuinness and Gerry Nolan the scorers but a desperately poor goal was conceded with the last play of the half to give Irvinestown a 2-3 to 0-2 half time lead.

Irvinestown, despite being reduced in numbers would net a goal on 36minutes. Belcoo responded with their only one of the game, Ben McNulty made an excellent turnover in the defence, Conor McKeown & Josh Killilea were involved before Emmett McGuinness drove the ball to the net. McGuinness added a point for 3-3 to 1-3 on 40minutes.

Belcoo would however continue in their error ridden ways, giving away possession cheaply but with very few making runs to provide options, the ball carrier had no other option at times than just kick the ball away. Frustrating for all concerned.

The visitors were gifted a goal and took over in general around the middle as they kicked three points in a five minute spell to seal the deal. Another incredibly soft goal followed as the game petered to its conclusion. Michael Burns landing a consolation point for his side three minutes from the end.

Belcoo host Ederney on Wednesday needing a win to get level on points with Lisnaskea. Should Lisnaskea get a draw or a win against Irvinestown on Wednesday, it won't matter what Belcoo do. See table below. Belcoo players to be at the pitch for 7pm Wednesday.

Team  Jamie Ray, Ben McNulty, Dara Flanagan, Colum Higgins, Conor McKeown, Gerry Nolan (0-1), Josh Killilea, Oisin O’Loughlin, Patrick Martin, Jack Greene, Emmett McGuinness (1-2), Eoin Corrigan, Michael Burns (0-1), Cian White, Patrick Magee. Sub Nathan McGovern.
