Sep 23, 2018 - U16 Girls Claim Championship Title After Titantic Tussel

U16 Girls B Championship Final: Belcoo 3-8 v 4-4 Devenish

Belcoo Under 16 Girls claimed the 'B' Championship Title after a titanic tussle with Devenish in Belleek this afternoon. It was incredibly tight throughout and it was surely heart in the mouth stuff in the end as a Devenish goal gave them the lead for the first time with just 5minutes play, Belcoo however dug deep as this group always does, and eeked out two late points to claim the title.

This group of Under 16’s are all underage again next year, the have won all 10 games they played this term and have now put the Championship trophy alongside the League title secured back in June time. Games like today will stand them in good stead as they move up a level next year to play higher competition football.

Today’s game was fast and frantic from moment one, every ball was challenged for with each player and team had, it was hard hitting too as robust tackles were shipped throughout. Belcoo got on the scoreboard first when Sinead Barrett picked out Ciana McGrath on the right wing with a fine kick pass, McGrath travelled some 30yards before drilling over an excellent point.

Cara Gray made several turnovers, dispossessing her player with the near hand tackle, it was from one of these that Belcoo worked a goal 7minutes into the contest. Scarlett O’Connor took up possession in the middle sector and moved forward, finding Aine Barrett who hit the net. Belcoo added another point moments later as the ball ricocheted off the post. Scarlett O’Connor and Aoife Keaney helped recover it before slipping the ball to Sinead Barrett for the point.

Devenish had looked dangerous going forward in the opening 10minutes but some superb defensive play by Rhianne McGuinness and Eimear Magee had thwarted attacks. The Garrison girls did open their account on 14minutes when Hannah Murphy pointed after patient play. An excellent block by Rhianne McGuinness denied another clean strike at goal soon after while Siofra McAloon cut out a dangerous pass to help Belcoo get back up the field where they worked a neat move that seen Aine Barrett point.

Devenish had there best spell of the opening half as they registered a quick goal and point to cut the deficit to a single point, 1-3 to 1-2. It was nearly more but Niamh McAloon beat away the ball on the goal line to prevent another three pointer. Belcoo though responded well. They worked a good move down the left, a great kickout by Riona Keaney found Mikayla Maguire on the wing, she drove upfield, Sam Martin, Aoife Keaney and Aine Barrett involved before Eve Barrett gained possession, skipped in towards goal and found the bottom corner.

Another fine dispossession by Cara Gray seen her then pick out Sinead Barrett who pointed from distance while a determinded Niamh McAloon drove out from centre back to take Belcoo downfield once more, a good ball into the right corner was fastened onto by Eve Barrett, she recycled to Aoife Keaney before Aine Barrett was fouled when taking a pass. Sinead Barrett slotted the free and it was to be 2-5 to 1-2 in the O’Rahilly’s favour at the interval.

The six point lead became just one inside 4minutes of the restart, Devenish quick from the blocks to hit 1-1, both scores from Hannah Murphy frees, the goal from 35yards dipping under the crossbar. 2-5 to 2-3. Belcoo steadied the ship with a Sinead Barrett point before they worked a great goal down the left wing, Ciara McGuinness was out in front to claim the ball, Ciana McGrath and Aine Barrett combined before Sam Martin broke through and rounded the keeper and stroked the ball into the net. 3-6 to 2-3.

With 15minutes to play Devenish were awarded a penalty, Ciana McGrath went to the sin bin and when the kick was converted it was a three point game. Murphy followed up the dispatched penalty with a free and the game was to sit at a two point difference for some 7minutes. As Belcoo readied Ciana McGrath for a return to the field, a long driven ball from Murphy dipped under the bar for a goal. Devenish now ahead for the first time, 4-4 to 3-6 with five minutes to play.

With the O’Rahilly’s restored to the full compliment of players they managed to get themselves back down the field. Some strong running on occasions late in the game by Sinead Barrett, Niamh McAloon, Aoife Keaney, Rhianne McGuinness and Sam Martin seen the O’Rahilly’s finish on top with Eimear Magee impressing down the left with the hardworking Cara Gray having a fine outing in midfield.

The two scores Belcoo got to finish were free kicks, both from superbly disciplined tackling as on both occasions the Devenish defenders were forced to overcarry the football. Sinead Barrett slotting the frees, the first from an acute angle, the second a more straightforward one in front of the goals.

Six minutes of added time were played before the final whistle went, Belcoo winners by the minimum, much to their delight.

Congratulations to all concerned, it was a fantastic battling display. Captain Aine Barrett received the Cup from Fermanagh Ladies Chairperson Ann McGrath with Devenish full back Grace Treacy being named player of the match.

Team (15 a side) Riona Keaney, Siofra McAloon, Rhianne McGuinness, Eimear Magee, Ciara Nolan, Niamh McAloon, Mikayla Maguire, Sam Martin (1-0), Cara Gray, Sinead Barrett (0-6), Aoife Keaney, Ciana McGrath (0-1), Scarlett O’Connor, Aine Barrett (1-1), Eve Barrett (1-0). Sep 20, 2018 - U13 Girls Make It Three Wins From Three

U13 Girls Section A: Devenish 2-2 v 5-16 Belcoo

Belcoo Under 13 Girls made it three wins from three with a good display the under lights in Garrison this evening. All 19 girls playing at least a half of football as the team lined out with a mix of youth and experience in both halves. By the interval Belcoo held a 4-9 to 1-1 lead before pushing on after the raft of changes to win 5-16 to 2-2. This completes the sectional programme for the side, 100% win record in tact meaning they will play in the Division 1 Semi Finals shortly.

Belcoo started on top as they penned back the home side, Sam Martin registering the first point of the game, cleverly fisting the ball over the bar before she drove forward and slipped Abbie McGovern in for a well taken goal on 4minutes. Cara Gray operating in the forward line this evening fisted a point after good work on the right from Riona Keaney and Emilie McCallion. The O’Rahilly’s got their second goal on 7minutes, Abbie McGovern again with a coolly taken strike after Ciara Parker had done well.

Eve Barrett and Riona Keaney were sharply onto break balls to kick points before Devenish worked their first score, a cracking shot nestling in the top left corner. 2-4 to 1-0. The Belcoo response was superb. Rachel Nolan picked out Sam Martin with the kickout on the left wing, she played the ball infield to the supporting Ciara Parker who took her two touches and popped a fist pass into Cara Gray who drilled low to the net.

Belcoo were winning back possession with some very disciplined tackling and over the next few minutes they finished off some lovely moves with well taken scores. Cairenn McGrath moved upfield from wing back and was involved in the attack on two occasions before slotting over an excellent score. Sam Martin fired over a brilliant long range effort while Emilie McCallion split the posts after a good catch close to goals.

Riona Keaney takes on her Devenish opponent in Thursday evenings victory

Devenish had made a few breaks up the field but Ciara McGuinness was in great form at the back alongside Eimear Gray, both using the ball well having cut out attacks. Abbie McGovern would cap a busy first half display at wing forward with her third goal, the ball worked well up field before Ciara Parker again supplied the final pass into McGovern. By the interval Cara Gray and Ciara Parker had added points while Devenish hit one as well for a 4-9 to 1-1 scoreline.

The completely new lineout in the second half took a few minutes to find their rhythm, Devenish began well but some great work by Serena McKeown and the supporting Caitlyn Nolan seen them deny the hosts on two occasions, the pair distributed the ball to sky blue jerseys also as the O’Rahilly’s returned to the attacking half of the field.

Sinead Barrett would clip over two neat points in a short cameo appearance before being withdrawn while the returning Siofra McAloon, who has been out a few weeks with an injury, got some good minutes under her belt, showing well in the forward line, good hands and clever play while a well taken goal capped her comeback. Rachel Nolan drilled over a good point from the right after a determined effort to claim the ball as Belcoo moved 5-12 to 1-1 ahead.

A quick 1-1 from the host side was stopped from being further by some well timed tackles by Megan Maguire and Caitlyn Nolan in the defence. Abbie McGovern returned to the fray at wing back and she soon got forward to kick a long range point. Niamh Cullen was doing well around the middle and added two points before the finish while Scarlett O’Connor was a lively presence in the attack, creating scores for others but kicking an excellent one herself in the final few minutes.

Lisa Lavery was unlucky on two occasions when going for goal, she grazed the post with one while the Devenish keeper made a good save from the other effort. Overall it was an encouraging evening from the Girls as they all made telling contributions and got plenty of touches which seen them make good and well judged decisions on the ball. There was a wide spread of scorers as 13 different players managed a score.

U13 Training will continue Monday from 7pm to 8.15pm. We wish the U16 Panel all the very best for Sunday’s Championship Final with Devenish. Bus leaving 2.40pm for that contest.
