Dec 3, 2018 - Belcoo Ladies Crowned League Champions!!!

SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 3 FINAL: Belcoo 4-6 v 1-7 Belnaleck

Belcoo Ladies claimed the Division 3 League Title after a great battle with a young Belnaleck side on Sunday afternoon. It was a game played with great intensity from the outset, the slippery underfoot conditions however made life difficult for all.

Some of the pressure applied and blocks made from both sides were superb with every ball being fiercely contested all over the field in what was a fine advertisement for Ladies football.

It was nip and tuck throughout the first half, the sides level on four occasions. Donna Feeley was to land the opening point from play after Crona Higgins and Arlene Furey had double teamed a Belnaleck attacker to claim the ball on the left wing.

Donna Feeley slips past a challenge

Shanna Cassidy responded on 4minutes with a pointed free before a first of three penalties were awarded in the game. A blocked clearance in the Belcoo defence seen a Belnaleck forward swoop onto the loose ball before being fouled in the penalty area. The penalty however was saved by Linda McGovern who had a brilliant hour between the sticks. The O’Rahilly’s would hit the front again on 10minutes, Collette Rice tapping over a free when Donna Feeley had been fouled.

It was pretty hectic at this juncture, Belnaleck threatening on a few occasions but the Belcoo rearguard remained solid. Leona McNulty, Arlene Furey and Michelle Cullen reading balls into the danger zone well to beat their opposition to possessions. The pressure applied on shots was fierce as Belnaleck continued to have their good spell. They were to level on 17minutes, Denise Lewsley drilling a shot at goal which Linda McGovern did well to tip over the bar.

Belcoo worked the kickout well to get Aine Barrett on the ball and back down the field they moved, the hardworking Eimear Higgins was involved in a one-two with Collette Rice before Higgins was fouled 20metres from goal and Rice knocked over the resulting free kick. Within a minute it was a tied encounter again at 0-3 a piece.

Lisa Stewart side steps a challenger

The match swung from end to end, a great long ball from Eimear Higgins sent Collette Rice through for a point while Seana Feeley, who had a wonderful hour at wing back, turned over two great balls in quick succession as Belcoo held the upperhand however they were failing to convert the possession into scores as the final pass went astray all too often.

Aisling Keenan would register an excellent point from long range for Belnaleck to make it 4 each but on the stroke of half time Belcoo hit the net. Player of the match Michelle Cullen made an unreal catch and moved upfield before a pinpoint pass into Donna Feeley seen her win the ball, beat her player and thump the ball to the net via the underside of the bar. 1-4 to 0-4 Belcoo lead at half time.

Michelle Cullen assessing her options during the second half

Belnaleck came out fast in the second half, two quick points were scored to cut the deficit to a single point. 1-4 to 0-6. They continued to pin Belcoo back but again, Leona McNulty and Lisa Stewart made blocks in the defensive end. Collette Rice would hit a good free for the O’Rahilly’s when they did break forward before Lisa Stewart drilled in a low shot to the net for a three pointer for her side. 2-5 to 0-6.

Belnaleck responded well and they were awarded a second penalty. The outcome was the same, Linda McGovern making a second great save to keep Belcoo five points up.

Lisa Stewart was sin binned for 10mins for a yellow card and within a minute Belnaleck registered a goal. They would continue to press forward but again the Belcoo defence were in no mood to concede any more scores. The trio of McNulty, Furey and Cullen fastened onto umpteen balls sent into the Belnaleck forward line while a few dipping shots were well dealt with by Linda McGovern in goals.

The introduction of Amanda McGrath proved key to the victory for Belcoo, clever play from the forward created the remaining scores for her side. On 52minutes she was brought down for a penalty as she shaped to score. Michelle Cullen strode up and confidently dispatched the ball into the bottom right corner.

Seconds later, McGrath found Aoife Keaney, who’d also been introduced, and she popped a great kickpass into Donna Feeley who drove in for a point. Belcoo were now looking good and soon made sure the trophy was going to be there’s. Belnaleck had made a promising attack but Leona McNulty came across to win back the ball in the left corner. She found Michelle Cullen who in turn played a lovely one bounce pass down the left channel to Amanda McGrath, with little options, McGrath held possession until the pass was on, Donna Feeley now available further forward, she was picked out with a great pass, Feeley offloaded to the supporting Lisa Stewart, who’d just returned to the fray and she rifled the ball into the roof of the net for a three goal lead with 4minutes to play.

Leona McNulty clears her lines in the second half

Belnaleck mustered a point in response. There was a late cameo from the legend that is Tina Gallagher who contributed so much throughout the season, of course she gained possession and picked out a fine pass as soon as she arrived onto the pitch. Talk of retirement will be addressed in due course.

Belcoo had done enough and were fit to see out the remaining minutes to record a hard earned victory and a place in Division 2 for 2019.

Huge congratulations to the players and management. It’s a fine achievement for the Ladies having reestablished this year. The break will be a short one with the season running on so long and the new year is almost upon us. The Cu’s are back.
