Jul 18, 2019 - U14 Girls Beaten In Division 1 League Final
U14 GIrls Division 1 Final: Kinawley 3-9 v 0-4 Belcoo
Our Under 14 Girls put it up to Kinawley for a long time in the Division 1 league final on Wednesday evening in Belnaleck. The sides had met three days previously in the league game with Kinawley running out 27point winners, 10-7 to 1-7. It was never going to be the same this evening and after an evenly matched opening half the scoreline read 1-3 to 0-4 in Kinawley’s favour.
The O’Rahilly’s would struggle in the second half to get out of their own half and they ultimately fell to a 3-9 to 0-4 defeat however the club haven’t been in a Division 1 League Final of any kind in 10years, boys, girls, men, women. This wee side has had a fabulous season.
It was tight from minute one of the first half, Kinawley making an early drive for goal but Cara Gray made a tremendous block. Moments later Rion McKenna bore down on goal and again Gray thwarted her forcing an overcarry. Belcoo would register with their first real attack, good interplay between Eve Barrett, Scarlett O’Connor and Rachel Nolan created the chance for Sinead Barrett to open the scoring.
Belcoo followed it up a few minutes later with a second score. Sinead Barrett’s free on the left seen Ciara Parker gather possession and go on a fabulous run before registering an excellent point from long range.
Ciara McGuinness was going really well at wing back with Eve Barrett and Rachel Nolan doing good work down the right, Sinead Barrett was heavily involved in all Belcoo’s best work while Sam Martin was claiming possession from kickouts.
By the halfway stage of the opening half Kinawley had levelled proceedings at 0-2 each. Caoimhe Hamilton and Orla Leonard had hit points. The winners then registered a first goal, Orla Leonard’s attempt for a point dipped under the bar and into the net.
The O’Rahilly’s responded well, Abbie McGovern swivelled in a real tight and crowed area somehow getting the shot away and on target as it split the posts. Hamilton would register a free at the other end but Belcoo finished the half with a long range free from Sinead Barrett after Scarlett O’Connor was fouled. Kinawley 1-3 v 0-4 Belcoo.
The second half was played in the Belcoo defensive area. Kinawley pinned back the O’Rahilly’s who simply couldn’t get out. Each clearance gathered by a royal blue jersey and they pressed forward. Two quick points were fired over by McKenna and Leonard before they were awarded a soft penalty. Orla Leonard duly dispatched to the net and it was 2-5 to 0-4.
There was a 8minute period without a score as Cara Gray, Eimear Gray and Siofra McAloon tried to stem the wave of attacks. Leonard and a Hamilton free pushed the winners further clear before another dipping shot for a point found the net, the goal killed the tie completed 6minutes from time.
Belcoo had continued to battle for every ball, things just weren’t coming off for them. They had a few half chances for scores but some stout defending from Kinawley kept them at bay.
It’s been a great season for our Under 14 girls who’ve made steady progress and continue to improve.
