May 19, 2019 - Ladies Beaten In Aughadrumsee

SENIOR LADIES DIVISION 2: Aughadrumsee 4-15 v 1-6 Belcoo

The Senior Ladies would suffer a defeat in Aughadrumsee on Sunday morning, three goals in 2minutes at the start of the second half putting the game beyond the O’Rahilly’s who were well in the game at the interval.

Belcoo had been looking dangerous in the attacking third of the field, they did register four good points in the first period and in truth they could and should have made much more from some promising counter attacks that failed to yield scores.

Aughadrumsee had some very pacey players, wing forward Aoife McCabe a first cousin of our McCabe’s, was tormentor in chief, the 15 year old proved a thorn in the O’Rahilly’s side throughout. For Belcoo, Rhianne McGuinness had an excellent hour at wing back with Leona McNulty and Sinead McCabe very solid in the full back line. Moving forward Aine Barrett, Michelle Cullen and Donna Feeley got on plenty of possession.

It was Belcoo who opened the scoring in the second minute. Rhianne McGuinness cut out a long ball and she played a great kickpass to Michelle Cullen, Cullen fed the supporting Aine Barrett who’s kickpass to Tamara Dolan seen Dolan slip the ball off to Cullen who’d continued her run and she split the posts. A well crafted first score.

Aughadrumsee would register 1-3 before Belcoo found the target again. This time Michelle Cullen was the prover with a neat pass inside to Donna Feeley who gathered and fired over the bar. Belcoo were having a good spell of possession when they added another score, again Rhianne McGuinness began the move with a great kickpass out of the defence to Collette Rice, she found Donna Feeley in space and Feeley fed Aine Barrett who’s looped round to help before drilling over. 1-3 to 0-3 with 15minutes played.

The hosts would pop over a great point from midfielder Aoife Flanagan but back came Belcoo, a slick move downfield seen Donna Feeley hit the post, the ball was only half cleared before working its way back into the hands of Feeley who was fouled. Michelle Cullen knocked over the resulting free kick. Belcoo were on top at this stage but they had four good attacks in a row that failed to yield a score, two narrow wides were recorded while the other two moves broke down at critical times with a stray pass.

Aughadrumsee capitalised and finished the half strongly hitting four unanswered points. Belcoo though had a great goal chance on 27minutes after a move down the left with Aoife Keaney, Crona Higgins, Collette Rice and Tamara Dolan which seen Dolan cut in from the left but she fired her shot across the face of the goal and wide. Half Time: Aughadrumsee 1-8 v 0-4 Belcoo.

Three goals in the first two minutes of this half ended the game as a contest. All goals were soft and avoidable, Belcoo failing to gather possession of the restarts and the ball was returned to the net.

To their credit, the O'Rahilly's continued to work hard and were rewarded on 35minutes with a goal of their own. Michelle Cullen won the kickout and played the ball 40yards downfield to Aine Barrett who showed good hands to gather, Barrett sent the ball further down the wing to Rice, who jinked past her player and found the roof of the net. 4-9 to 1-4.

The next four points were all from play by Aoife McCabe who drove through the middle and slotted over three of theses with one other being from way out on the right wing, score of the day by a long way. A strong Seana Feeley run seen her upended, Collette Rice knocking over the free hit. Eimear Higgins had a half chance for goal while Rice nearly got in for another too.

Belcoo’s final score of the day was another well worked one, McGuinness beginning the move, Michelle Cullen and Seana Feeley worked the ball downfield before Cullen split the posts. It was another encouraging display despite the final scoreline. The O’Rahilly’s are playing some good stuff at times against higher level opposition this season, it will stand them in good stead going forward.

Up next is Ederney away, match is scheduled for Sunday 26th at 11am, they’ve requested to play game on Wednesday 29th May. We will make a call on it when all girls have responded.

Team: Chloe Dolan, Sinead McCabe, Leona McNulty, Aoife Keaney, Rhianne McGuinness, Crona Higgins, Stacey McCabe, Eimear Higgins, Seana Feeley, Aine Barrett (0-1), Michelle Cullen (0-3), Kelly Connolly, Donna Feeley (0-1), Collette Rice (1-1), Tamara Dolan.

May 17, 2019 - Heartbreak For U16 Girls In Superb League Final

U16 Division 2 League Final: Derrygonnelly 3-1 v 0-7 Belcoo

No words could do this Final justice. For those in attendance, they were served up as good a game as football as you’ll see all year as they witnessed a thrilling contest of pure heart, grit and determination from two sides that gave their absolute everything for the hour. Played in great spirits and a fantastic advertisement for Ladies football, there was to be a winner and loser on the night, unfortunately for our young but incredibly fierce and brave O’Rahilly’s they sat the wrong side of the score at the full time whistle despite outscoring the winners, goals proved the telling factor, Derrygonnelly 3-1 v 0-7 Belcoo.

Two of the Harps goals came in the opening 11minutes, Bronagh Smyth the scorer on both occasions. Belcoo had been under early pressure but they had a well-constructed point sandwiched between the goals as Mikayla Maguire slotted over in the 9th minute after a good move down the right hand side. P7 Ciara Parker finding Aoife Keaney who in turn set Scarlett O’Connor away and she picked out Maguire who made no mistake with the finish.

Belcoo’s issue early on was the ball kept coming back as Derrygonnelly were doing well to keep the ball in that half of the field. Derrygonnelly’s issue was they couldn’t get any more scores and they would actually go a full 40minutes without registering again. Some unbelievably and endless pressure was applied by every single O’Rahilly. Balls were turned over, ball were robbed, blocks were made, it was outrageous stuff.

Goalkeeper Riona Keaney pulled off a few good catches under high balls, Ciara Parker made a brilliant last ditch block, Cara Gray denied shots right, left and centre, Ciana McGrath read play to step in and thwart danger, Eimear Gray won balls she’d no right to win, Siofra McAloon done what Siofra McAloon does, stopped players time after time, got to the loose, dirt ball first and drove through the tackles. It was incredible stuff.

Moving forward, things were clicking into gear. Aine Barrett was showing well despite being marked tightly, she got on umpteen balls to prove the link from defence to attack. Eve Barrett was lively, first to clearances, showing good first touch and dancing down the line. Scarlett O’Connor was getting on loads of ball and driving the side upfield, using possession well with Rachel Nolan playing one-two’s, keeping the moves going. Mikayla Maguire drifted out the field and would create a score for Eve Barrett who pointed on 18minutes.

The O’Rahilly’s finished the half on top and would knock over three more points. Sam Martin powering through from midfield to slot over while Rachel Nolan split the post on the left side and Sinead Barrett knocked over a free kick while they created a great goal chance, Rachel Nolan unfortunate with the finish but the defenders had done well to pressure the strike at goal. Half time and just a point between them. Derrygonnelly 2-0 v 0-5 Belcoo.

The work being done had to be seen to be believed. Defensively Belcoo didn’t give an inch, Riona Keaney again making some telling stops between the posts while those in front of her worked tirelessly. Sinead Barrett was turning over balls around the middle of the field while Rhianne McGuinness made some great interceptions. Aoife Keaney continued to help get Belcoo moving upfield with Eve Barrett an outlet down the right side.

Aine Barrett tied the game on 42minutes with a left footed score. Belcoo had a great goal chance soon after following a strong run from Sam Martin, the ball almost creeping over the goal-line but the Harps keeper got back to clear. Ciana McGrath made a lung bursting run from centre back, played the ball out wide and continued her run forward, Eve Barrett pinged a great ball into the path of McGrath, a superb block from a Derrygonnelly defender kept the ball out of the net.

It was end to end and pure helter skelter stuff at this stage, in truth it was like this from minute one of this gripping contest, the Harps would register a goal on 51minutes and quickly added a point. These were telling blows but Belcoo rallied again, Sinead Barrett, Scarlett O’Connor, Siofra McAloon, Mikayla Maguire and Sam Martin all carried the ball forward. Ciara Nolan made a great impact from the bench, driving towards the Harps goals, she created the score for Aine Barrett who pointed from distance to leave a goal between the sides with 4minutes to play. The goal Belcoo craved to level an epic encounter never materialised and it was the Derrygonnelly who claimed the Division 2 League Title on home soil.

Belcoo’s goalkeeper Riona Keaney was awarded player of the match for her fine display during the hour, the ever reliable custodian alert to several overhit balls, she stopped numerous dangerous balls and made some great wee saves at vital times.
