Sep 20, 2018 - U13 Girls Make It Three Wins From Three

U13 Girls Section A: Devenish 2-2 v 5-16 Belcoo

Belcoo Under 13 Girls made it three wins from three with a good display the under lights in Garrison this evening. All 19 girls playing at least a half of football as the team lined out with a mix of youth and experience in both halves. By the interval Belcoo held a 4-9 to 1-1 lead before pushing on after the raft of changes to win 5-16 to 2-2. This completes the sectional programme for the side, 100% win record in tact meaning they will play in the Division 1 Semi Finals shortly.

Belcoo started on top as they penned back the home side, Sam Martin registering the first point of the game, cleverly fisting the ball over the bar before she drove forward and slipped Abbie McGovern in for a well taken goal on 4minutes. Cara Gray operating in the forward line this evening fisted a point after good work on the right from Riona Keaney and Emilie McCallion. The O’Rahilly’s got their second goal on 7minutes, Abbie McGovern again with a coolly taken strike after Ciara Parker had done well.

Eve Barrett and Riona Keaney were sharply onto break balls to kick points before Devenish worked their first score, a cracking shot nestling in the top left corner. 2-4 to 1-0. The Belcoo response was superb. Rachel Nolan picked out Sam Martin with the kickout on the left wing, she played the ball infield to the supporting Ciara Parker who took her two touches and popped a fist pass into Cara Gray who drilled low to the net.

Belcoo were winning back possession with some very disciplined tackling and over the next few minutes they finished off some lovely moves with well taken scores. Cairenn McGrath moved upfield from wing back and was involved in the attack on two occasions before slotting over an excellent score. Sam Martin fired over a brilliant long range effort while Emilie McCallion split the posts after a good catch close to goals.

Riona Keaney takes on her Devenish opponent in Thursday evenings victory

Devenish had made a few breaks up the field but Ciara McGuinness was in great form at the back alongside Eimear Gray, both using the ball well having cut out attacks. Abbie McGovern would cap a busy first half display at wing forward with her third goal, the ball worked well up field before Ciara Parker again supplied the final pass into McGovern. By the interval Cara Gray and Ciara Parker had added points while Devenish hit one as well for a 4-9 to 1-1 scoreline.

The completely new lineout in the second half took a few minutes to find their rhythm, Devenish began well but some great work by Serena McKeown and the supporting Caitlyn Nolan seen them deny the hosts on two occasions, the pair distributed the ball to sky blue jerseys also as the O’Rahilly’s returned to the attacking half of the field.

Sinead Barrett would clip over two neat points in a short cameo appearance before being withdrawn while the returning Siofra McAloon, who has been out a few weeks with an injury, got some good minutes under her belt, showing well in the forward line, good hands and clever play while a well taken goal capped her comeback. Rachel Nolan drilled over a good point from the right after a determined effort to claim the ball as Belcoo moved 5-12 to 1-1 ahead.

A quick 1-1 from the host side was stopped from being further by some well timed tackles by Megan Maguire and Caitlyn Nolan in the defence. Abbie McGovern returned to the fray at wing back and she soon got forward to kick a long range point. Niamh Cullen was doing well around the middle and added two points before the finish while Scarlett O’Connor was a lively presence in the attack, creating scores for others but kicking an excellent one herself in the final few minutes.

Lisa Lavery was unlucky on two occasions when going for goal, she grazed the post with one while the Devenish keeper made a good save from the other effort. Overall it was an encouraging evening from the Girls as they all made telling contributions and got plenty of touches which seen them make good and well judged decisions on the ball. There was a wide spread of scorers as 13 different players managed a score.

U13 Training will continue Monday from 7pm to 8.15pm. We wish the U16 Panel all the very best for Sunday’s Championship Final with Devenish. Bus leaving 2.40pm for that contest.

Sep 15, 2018 - U13 Girls Win High Quality Affair With Derrygonnelly

U13  Girls Section A: Belcoo 2-9 v 0-3 Derrygonnelly

Belcoo Under 13 Girls made it two wins from two after a great battle with Derrygonnelly at MacNean Park this evening. The level of play on show from both sides was of a very high standard and the game was much closer than the final scoreline suggested. Belcoo winners 2-9 to 0-3 but it really was tight and tough throughout.

It was 15 a side meaning all the O’Rahilly’s girls played every minute of the contest, some were making their first start at all girls football and they equipped themselves magnificently well. It was a really encouraging display from this group of girls, togetherness, support play, hard work and backing each other up.

The Harps side opened the scoring on two minutes. They were physically taller than the Belcoo girls but the home side love a challenge. There was some excellent passages of play when the hosts found their stride. Lisa Lavery goaled on six minutes before Belcoo began to work some lovely scores.

Abbie McGovern breaks away from her opponent

A flowing move through the hands seen Eve Barrett land a point on 11minutes. Abbie McGovern had a fine game securing possession with great first touch control and slipping it to supporting players, a combination of McGovern, Sam Martin and Scarlett O’Connor seen Eve Barrett slip in for another point.

Defensively Belcoo were going well, Cara Gray made two outrageous blocks with Cairenn McGrath reading things superbly as a last line of defence to cut out dangerous attacks before moving the ball down the wings to Eimear Gray and the lively Emilie McCallion.

The O’Rahilly’s worked another excellent point, Sinead Barrett was to the fore all evening and she carried possession upfield before feeding Abbie McGovern who split the posts. Moments later Eve Barrett was again on the end of the move to point, Ciara Parker doing brilliantly in the middle of the field to break through the tackle and find Barrett with a fist pass.

Ciara Parker holds tight under pressure from three Harps girls

Derrygonnelly would land two quick points at the other end while Riona Keaney was at her sweeping keeper best again to come from her goals to pick up some dangerous balls. Caitlyn Nolan got the hand in well to dispossess her player while Niamh Cullen was having a good battle with her opposite number.

The final score of the half was to be a Belcoo one, Cairenn McGrath made the turnover in the left corner back position, Cara Gray burst out from the back, Sinead Barrett and Sam Martin were involved as the ball was fed into Abbie McGovern who fisted to Scarlett O’Connor for a fine point. Half time. Belcoo 1-5 v 0-3 Derrygonnelly.

Scarlett O'Connor drives upfield in the first half

Every ball continued to be contested for with the fiercest of determination by the two sides in the second half. Some excellent pressure was applied, great kicking and awareness of players around them to use the simply options.

Belcoo were on the scoresheet three minutes into the half, Rachel Nolan with a well timed hand in to break the ball loose from the Harps defender, Eve Barrett swooping onto the loose ball to land another point. Barrett was on the end of some good work by Emile McCallion and Abbie McGovern on the right wing to land another score from play.

The O’Rahilly’s would work a goal from Sinead Barrett next, drilling low to the corner while Scarlett O’Connor hit a nice point from play on the right side. Again there was strong play in the middle of the field by Sam Martin ably assisted by Eimear Gray and Ciara Parker, they picked up several clearances while further back, Caitlyn Nolan again came out with some ball as did Cairenn McGrath having stood up her opponent well.

The final score of the game was a well struck shot by Sam Martin. Derrygonnelly pressured into kicking some wides in the second half. It was a great contest, the scoreline does the vistiros a disservice for the effort they put into it. They are a fine outfit.

Training continues Monday at 7pm. The U13s are away to Devenish on Monday. Bus leaving 5.50pm.

Team (15 a side) Riona Keaney, Caitlyn Nolan, Cara Gray, Cairenn McGrath, Eimear Gray, Niamh Cullen, Ciara Parker, Sam Martin (0-1), Sinead Barrett (1-0), Eve Barrett (0-5), Scarlett O’Connor (0-2), Emilie McCallion, Abbie McGovern (0-1), Rachel Nolan, Lisa Lavery (1-0).

Sep 14, 2018 - Belcoo Ladies Win Entertaining Encounter With Belnaleck

Ladies Senior League Division 3: Belnaleck 2-11 v 7-4 Belcoo

Belcoo Senior Ladies would avenge an earlier season defeat to fellow parishioners Belnaleck in Arney this evening in an entertaining affair. The O’Rahilly’s five goal blast in the opening half providing the platform for a 7-4 to 2-11 success.

It was a battle from minute one as both sides put everything into it. Shanna Cassidy raced downfield early on but a fine save from goalkeeper Linda McGovern denied her while Leona McNulty was on hand to gather and clear the danger. Cassidy however would open the scoring on 3minutes while Collette Rice was sin binned for no mouthguard. The O’Rahilly’s took the lead on 5minutes with a fortuitous first goal. Lisa Stewart’s long range free dipping under the crossbar for a three pointer.

The hosts would tie matters with two well taken points in quick succession but despite the numeral disadvantage the O’Rahilly’s worked the ball upfield for Donna Feeley to thump in a second goal. The visitors were moving the ball well and created two more scoring opportunities after flowing moves but the efforts from Lisa Stewart and Amanda McGrath went narrowly wide.

Belcoo remained on top in all sectors over the next five minutes, the forward line showing well and looking dangerous while defensively they were solid, turning over Belnaleck attacks time after time. Michelle Cullen had a fierce game at Centre Back cutting out so much ball and delivering some excellent passes into the forwards. It was from Cullen the next goal came, she was strong to win a dirty ball before working a one two with Seana Feeley as they moved down the field before slipping the ball over the top to Donna Feeley who made no mistake dispatching the ball to the net, 3-0 to 0-3.

Another great turnover in defence from Arlene Furey seen seven of the eleven players involved in a sweeping move upfield, the shot from Donna Feeley at the end of it went narrowly wide. The O’Rahilly’s were going well but needed to put scores on the board during this spell and eventually they arrived.

A long Linda McGovern kickout was gathered by Michelle Cullen, she offloaded to the supporting Seana Feeley who played the ball down the left channel to Amanda McGrath, she slipped the ball infield to Lisa Stewart who steadied and split the posts for a first point for her side. Belcoo nearly registered a fourth goal when Collette Rice’s free was caught close to goal by Amanda McGrath, she recycled to Eimear Higgins who’s drilled shot brought a good save from the goalkeeper Moya Hill.

The goal would come in a next passage of play, Seana Feeley winning a free on the left, she played the ball quickly to Lisa Stewart who seen her shot for a point dip under the crossbar again. From the kickout Collette Rice gained possession and weaved past four challenges before a left footed effort for a point found the top right corner of the net. 18minutes on the clock, Belcoo now 5-1 to 0-3 up.

Things turned in Belnaleck’s favour over the closing minutes of the first half, they finished strong as Belcoo tired slightly. Two Shanna Cassidy points were registered either side of a first goal for the home team while Aisling Keenan kicked a fine point from long range on the stroke of half time. There were two other dangerous balls into the wee square but Linda McGovern and Eimear Higgins turned them wide of the goals for 45’s. Half time: Belnaleck 1-6 v 5-1 Belcoo.

Belcoo would hold sway for the first 10minutes of the second half however they only managed one point, Amanda McGrath turning to land a great score after Eimear Higgins had done well down the left to win back possession, Collette Rice, Lisa Stewart and Donna Feeley all involved before McGrath gathered and swung over the point.

Belnaleck were to match the Belcoo score from a free kick before Michelle Cullen made one of the finest catches you’ll see under pressure from two opponents. She would then pick out Collette Rice who raced in for a good point. The game was becoming very stretched at this juncture but on three occasions Arlene Furey was alert to the danger coming from the full back line to intercept passes and get Belcoo moving upfield again. Seana Feeley was curtailing Cassidy very well with Crona Higgins getting through a lot of unseen work at this time.

For the second game running, Leona McNulty gave away a penalty, on this occasion the shot was fired over the crossbar while Belcoo produced an empathic response. Eimear Higgins gained the kickout, played a one two with sister Crona before she found Lisa Stewart who in turn kicked it down the right wing to the lively Donna Feeley, Feeley played a quick one two with Amanda McGrath before rifling an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net, 6-3 to 1-8 the score.

The home side would slot over another free before Farah McCloskey netted from the right wing. Again though the Belcoo response was superb. Lisa Stewart caught a long kickout from Linda McGovern, she turned and chipped the ball through to Donna Feeley who was gone again, lit down the field, running in for another well taken three pointer. Feeley would pop over a point from the left wing with four minutes to play, it proved to be the last score for her side while two late points from the hosts left it an 8 point win for Belcoo on a 7-4 (25) to 2-11 (17) scoreline.

Training continues Tuesday at 7pm.

Team (11 a side): Linda McGovern, Leona McNulty, Arlene Furey, Michelle Cullen, Crona Higgins, Eimear Higgins, Seana Feeley, Lisa Stewart (2-1), Collette Rice (1-1), Donna Feeley (4-1), Amanda McGrath (0-1). Sub Used Ciana McGrath.
