Belcoo Player Wins Skill Competition
Sep. 2, 2009
On Wednesday 19th August 2009 forty three U12 players from 13 Fermanagh clubs travelled to the excellent Brookeborough club facilities to take part in the Fermanagh U12 Skills Competition.
The players had to display their prowess in a series of skill-based activities including the Pick up, Target Poles and Accuracy Square for kicking, Hand Passing, Punt Kick and Free Taking. The players moved from one skill station to another until they had all six skills completed and when the scores were tallied, the players selected to represent Fermanagh at the O’Neill’s sponsored Ulster Finals were announced.
Summer Camp coaches Declan Maguire, Tom Crudden, Terri Cassidy, Natasha Donegan, Eimear Keenan, Joanne Lynch, Kevin Connolly, Cathair Shannon and Seamus McMahon manned the stations and they were helped by the coaches/parents from the various clubs present.
After an hour of enjoyable competition the players had completed all the skills and the results were as follows: 1st Nathan Stewart, Belcoo, 2nd Johnny Owens, Belnaleck, Joint 3rd Thomas McCaffrey, Brookeborough, Lee Jones, Derrygonnelly, Conor Carney, Enniskillen, Ryan Flanagan, Lisnaskea, Ciaran McNabb, St. Joseph’s and Conor McGee, St. Joseph’s.
Unfortunately only five players can compete in the Ulster Finals and on count-back it was decided that Ciaran McNabb, Lee Jones and Conor Carey will join Nathan Stewart and Johnny Owens on Finals day.
These five players are now invited to represent Fermanagh at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena(MUSA), Cookstown, at 11.00am on Saturday 12th September where they will compete against representatives from the other Ulster counties in the O’Neill’s sponsored Ulster Finals.
At the Finals there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in both codes with both overall winners receiving a full set of underage jerseys for their club, sponsored by O'Neill’s Sportswear.
Before the presentation of medals to the young players the organiser GDM, Peter McGinnity, thanked the Brookeborough club and Liam Wray for accommodating the competition, the coaches who organised the skill stations and the coaches/parents who came along and helped out. He finished by congratulating and complimenting all the young players on their high level of skill.
