JUNIORS RELEGATED AS GAELS PROMOTED
Oct. 13, 2012
JUNIORS: Belcoo 1-10 v 5-8 Enniskillen Gaels
Belcoo Juniors will play in Division 2 next season following a defeat to Enniskillen Gaels in the Relegation/Promotion Playoff in Derrygonnelly on Saturday evening. The Gaels recorded a 5-8 to 1-10 win as a two goal haul within 60seconds midway through the second half effectively sealed the game.
The O’Rahilly’s had begun well and after a few fruitless attacks Aaron Dolan would land the opening score of the game from distance. Brian McAleer responded for the Gaels before Ciaran Flaherty and Dolan extended Belcoo’s lead, 0-3 to 0-1 by the 14th minute.
The Gaels had an impressive period of play and we rewarded with 2-2 before Belcoo would score again. Niall McGovern turned his marker, bore down on goal and his shot clipped the crossbar and went over. A long angled ball into Lavelle was well taken and tucked underneath Belcoo keeper Eunan Mullally for the first goal and shortly after Niall McGovern had a second goal for the Gaels as his initial shot rebounded off the crossbar and back into his path.
Rory Rafferty added a point as the Enniskillen outfit pushed into a 2-3 to 0-3 lead. Over the closing 5minutes of the half both sides traded two points a piece with McAleer on target with both of his teams points while Flaherty and Aidan McGrath pointed to leave the score 2-5 to 0-5 at the break.
Belcoo flew from the blocks at the beginning of the second half. Damian Holleran seen a shot smartly saved by Ollie Kane. Declan Leonard landed a good score from play before Eunan Mullally, who had been moved to corner forward from goals, would make an immediate impact as he punched a long ball into the net to bring just two points between the sides at 2-5 to 1-6.
The O’Rahilly’s would squander a number of guilt edged scoring opportunities over the next 5minutes and would be made pay for their inaccuracy in front of goal as the Gaels would fire in 2-1 in a matter of minutes to take a commanding lead in this contest. McAleer registered a point before Paddy Reilly and Niall McGovern capitalised on some poor defending to find the net and move the Gaels 4-6 to 1-6 ahead.
To their credit Belcoo continued to press forward and Damian Holleran would land the next two scores before the Gaels Keeper Kane made a wonderful save to deny Ian Corrigan as he dived to his left to prevent a goal. Aaron Dolan would rattle the crossbar after an impressive run but having almost had two goals, Belcoo would be hit by a sucker punch as Niall McGovern would find the Belcoo net for a third time moving his side 5-6 to 1-8 ahead.
As the game petered out Eunan Mullally and Declan Leonard would clip over points while Daniel Keenan stroked over a 45 and Niall McGovern completed the scoring as the Gaels achieved promotion to Division 1 via a 5-8 to 1-10 score.
