Late Goal Denies Seniors Victory
Feb. 3, 2013
GREENCASTLE 1-4 v 0-7 BELCOO
A late Greencastle goal denied Belcoo a victory their performance deserved in this Ulster Senior League Group A encounter. The O’Rahilly’s had travelled to the Tyrone venue and produced a workmanlike display which looked to have sealed the win but a stoppage time free kick was floated into the square and flicked into the net giving the hosts a share of the spoils.
Greencastle had the advantage of the breeze in the opening period but Belcoo defended resolutely. It was the visitors who registered the opening two scores. Midfielder John Carrigan was first to find the target as he drilled over a good point following a flowing move while some patient build up play finished with Ciarán Flaherty picking out Gavin Leonard who fired over from 20yards.
The hosts got themselves on the scoreboard thanks to a 45 from Cathir McCullagh while a number of pressurised shots failed to find the target. Belcoo were continuing to enjoy the lion share of possession with Patrick Burns impressing around the middle sector as the O’Rahilly’s picked up a number of break balls and remained in control of the tie.
Belcoo’s hit a third point some 20minutes into the game, a strong run by Paul McGrath seen him slip the ball to Ronan Ferguson who applied the finish. Greencastle again cut the deficit to one from a deadball as the half ended with Belcoo holding a slender 0-3 to 0-2 lead.
The game ebbed and flowed in the second period with Belcoo having the majority of the ball. Ronan Ferguson kicked an early point but the hosts responded with a score from Sean Warnock.
Paul McGrath fisted a point after good work from Shain Gallagher while Ronan Ferguson drilled over another point to push Belcoo into a 0-6 to 0-3 lead. At this stage Belcoo were on top but failed to put the game beyond their opponents as a few good opportunities were squandered.
With just 5minutes remaining McCullagh kicked a difficult free kick from the right wing for the hosts but Belcoo managed to put three between the sides as Ferguson was again on target.
Late drama in sued as the win was snatched from Belcoo, a stoppage time free kick on the right side 25yards from goal was awarded, the ball was dropping into the danger zone where a Greencastle fist met the ball and it found the net.
In the other Group A game Steelstown beat Slaughtneil 0-11 to 0-9. Next weekend Slaughtneil host Greencastle while Ardara host Steelstown. Belcoo have a bye.
