U14's Lose Out In Last Minute
Feb. 23, 2013
U14 League: Belcoo 5-4 v 4-9 Brookeborough
Deep into added time a Brookeborough goal seen the visitors pick up a 2point victory in Belcoo on Sunday afternoon. Belcoo fielded 5 debutants including 3 primary school players started this Under 14 league game very strongly. The home side opened the scoring on 4minutes with a point scored from play after a neat passage of play and an intellengent pass from Fiachra McAloon finding Ciaran Flanagan who made no mistake firing to the net.
Conor McAloon knocked over a long range free before James McAloon added a third score. A well organised Belcoo pushed further ahead when Flanagan returned the favour from earlier and put Fiachra McAloon through on goal and the youngster confidently drilled to the net.
After a lacklustre opening quarter Brookebourough got their first point as they began to grow into the contest. The visitors have several attempts on goal and were denied by a man of the match display by primary school goalkeeper, Oisin McGrath.
With 20 minutes on the clock, Belcoo went into a comfortable lead with a Ciaran Flanagan goal and another point from play by James McAloon. Brookebough kept plugging away and got 2 points before the interval. Pat Greene, Martin Conwell, James McQuaid and Seamus Moane working hard for the visitors. HT Belcoo 2-4 v 0-3 Brookeborough.
On the restart it was Brookeborough that took total control for the next 15 minutes. Belcoo lost their shape entirely and quickly conceded a goal and 2 points. However, things got worse as the young O'Rahillys conceded a penalty and the coverted goal put the opposition in front for the first time in the match 2-5 to 2-4.
Belcoo conceded a further 4 points and by now it appeared that the game was lost. Nevertheless, the Belcoo players regrouped and a final twelve minutes of pressure saw Dermot Burns give a lovely ball to Conor McAloon who volleyed from distance to the back of the net.
Belcoo were growing in confidence and further goals were finished off by Michael McGourty and Ciaran Flanagan although the visitors had netted a third goal in between the two Belcoo strikes as O'Rahillys entered added time holding a 5-4 to 3-9 advantage.
Unfortunately for the hosts there was a late twist in the tail. Brookebough broke through the Belcoo defence and despite yet another good save from McGrath, the rebound was collected by the Brookeborough forward and he scored a goal from close range. This was to be the final kick of the game and in the end sheer disappointment for the young Belcoo lads.
The Belcoo team was as follows: Oisin McGrath, Cormac McHugh, Lawrence McKeown, Shane Doherty, Colm Furey, Gerard McHugh, James McAloon (0-2) Eoin Shiels (Captain) Conor McAloon (1-1) Michael McGourty (1-0) Dermot Burns, Fiachra McAloon (1-0) Ciaran Flanagan (2-1) and Luka Gribben.
