Goals Undo Seniors In Ardara

Box Score

Feb. 25, 2013

Ulster Senior League Group A: Ardara (Donegal) 3-5 v 1-9 Belcoo

Belcoo suffered a two point defeat in Donegal on Sunday afternoon going down 3-5 to 1-9 against Ardara. It was another good workout for the O’Rahilly’s however qualification from the group is no longer achievable with Steelstown defeating Greencastle in today’s other encounter.

Belcoo played against a stiff breeze and after an impressive opening 30minutes they had held their opponents to 1-2 having knocked over 5good points themselves.

Early points from Ciaran Flaherty and a Stephen Maguire free gave the visitors a good start however an 8th minute penalty seen the hosts open their account. A quick flowing move ended with Niall Leonard hauling down Gareth Concarr and the Ardara man picked himself up to take the spot kick, coolly beating Aidan Leonard in the Belcoo goals.

Belcoo almost hit back with a goal as a strong run from Ryan Leonard seen the corner back break through on goal but fire narrowly wide. A Gavin Leonard point was sandwiched between efforts from Peter McNelis and Conor Cassen as the hosts led 1-2 to 0-3 at the midway stage of the half. Belcoo were playing some neat football against the elements while turning over their opponents on a number of occasions, they had managed to draw level by the break after Ronan Ferguson and Niall Leonard had tagged on a point a piece.

Ardara made a good start to the second period as they worked a second goal, having picked up a break ball in midfield they drove forward with Gareth Concarr again the man who applied the finish. Belcoo responded immediately with Gavin Leonard firing in a goal at the other end having gathered a loose ball in front of goals.

The hosts would had a period of dominance where they added two more points from wing forward Kieran Breslin as they took a firm grip of the game.

Belcoo regained a foothold in the tie and superb long range points from John Carrigan and Stephen Maguire levelled proceedings again. The O’Rahillys were now in the ascendancy but struggled to take the lead. Both Carrigan and Maguire struck the upright with attempts from distance and completely against the run of play Ardara broke for a third and ultimately crucial goal.

A good block in the defence allowed the hosts to counter the entire length of the field before the attack ended with another three pointer. Belcoo continued to battle but a sole point from Ciaran Flaherty was all they could muster over the closing few minutes as they lost out by 2points.
