Senior Open League With A Draw
Apr. 14, 2013
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1: Belcoo 1-7 v 1-7 Lisnaskea
It ended all square in this noon showdown as Belcoo and Lisnaskea played out a draw, 1-7 a piece. The gale force swirling wind proved difficult to judge for both sets of players throughout and the visitors held a 3point interval lead with the elements favouring them before Belcoo pegged them back to level by the final whistle.
Belcoo were to have the better of the opening exchanges against the breeze and opening their account straight from the throw in as Paul McGrath released Ciaran Flaherty to drill over. Lisnaskea came into the contest but some stout Belcoo defending forced the visitors to long range efforts which drifted wide.
The Emmets would get their first score some 10minutes into the contest and it was to be a goal. Aidy Little broke through on goal but James McGrath's great initial save fell kindly for Sean Keenan to tap into the net soccer style.
The flow of the game was prodominantly with Lisnaskea at the mid point in the half. Young debutant Thomas Clarke in particular was impressive at midfield while Kille was heavily involved in most good moves. Belcoo however remained resolute at the back with the Leonard twins having the upper hand on their opponents in the full back line.
Daniel Kille, Mark Little, Sean Keenan and Aidy Little would all register first half scores for the visitors while Ronan Ferguson finished a good Belcoo move before Shane McCabe netted. A swift move up the field involving Brian Cox, Ferguson, Jonathan Feeley ended with McCabe cooly side stepping Lisnaskea goalkeeper Darren Graham and a defender to tuck the ball into the net from close range on 25minutes. Flaherty would again begin the scoring in this half before a Jonathan Feeley free kick after a strong run by Cox reduced the deficit to one. The visitors managed to stem the tide as Kille popped over 21m free but it was Belcoo who took charge around the middle of the field. Paul McGrath claimed three kickouts in a row while Seamus Conlon and Brian Cox continued to boss proceedings. Scores however proved hard to come by in this dominant period and a sole John Carrigan free was all the home side could muster.
Mark Little fired over from play on 46minutes and this proved to be Lisnaskea's final score of the game. At 1-7 to 1-5 McGrath intercepted a Kille pass and broke forward, he slipped the ball to Ferguson who inturn found Flaherty but a fine save from Graham denied the forward a goal. The hosts would squander some good opportunites to close the gap before they eventually found a score from a Feeley free.
With 5minutes remaining Lisnaskea led by one and wing back Niall McElroy broke through but shot wide going for a goal which may have sealed the victory. Belcoo would find an equaliser as McCabe sent Kieran Leonard away and he slotted over from an acute angle on the left wing. Up next Belcoo travel to Erne Gaels on Friday at 7.15pm while Lisnaskea host Devenish.
