Seniors Take Hiding In Belleek
Apr. 20, 2013
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1: Erne Gaels 2-13 v 1-6 Belcoo
Erne Gaels recorded a comprehensive 10point success in Belleek on Friday evening over Belcoo. It was level pegging at the break but a powerful second period seen the home side hold Belcoo scoreless and run in an answered 1-7 of their own for a handsome victory.
The hosts made the early running with the impressive Ryan Lyons accounting for all four of his sides opening points. Belcoo sole response in the first 10mins was a Ronan Ferguson point.Seamus Ryder would fist a goal on 12mins over 'keeper Patrick Burns to hoist his side 6points clear having earlier sent a warning to the visitors when a similar high ball was fisted onto the crossbar.
The goal sparked a labouring Belcoo into action and for a 15minute spell they bossed proceedings. An incisive move involving Shane McCabe, Jonathan Feeley and Ferguson ended with the latter slipping Aaron Dolan through on goal to fire into the net.
Buoyed by the goal Belcoo continued on the front foot. Paul McGrath pointed from an acute angle on the right wing while Feeley rattled over a good score. Ronan Ferguson notched two more well taken points as Belcoo now found themselves ahead as the interval approached, 1-5 to 1-4.
Ronan Cox ventured forward to level matters from a right wing shot while Ciaran Flaherty slotted over for Belcoo. A Mark Lyons point on the blow of half time levelled matters at 1-6 a piece.

Few would have predicted such a one sided second half but in truth Belcoo had plenty of possession. Ryan Lyons hit the only score of the first 10mins as Belcoo failed to breakthrough an overloaded home defence. Loose final passes and some wayward shooting ment the visitors failed to raise the white flag when on top during this period.
At the other an breakaway seen Ronan Cox bore down on goal but a magnificent save from James McGrath who'd came on for Burns having arrived late from work commitment, the 'keeper pushing the ball onto the post.
Counter attacks were how Erne Gaels had setup to play and on 42minutes Cox registered a point before a 2nd Erne Gaels goal put the home side in a commanding position. Ryan Lyons getting the three pointer on this occasion with a close range finish.
From here to the end the home side had the measure of their opponents and picked off points with ease. Paul McGuinness, Lyons and Ryder were all on target during the closing stages while Belcoo's limp efforts faded.
