Seniors Inflict a First Defeat to League Leaders Derrygonnelly
Jun. 9, 2013
Belcoo travelled to Derrygonnelly and upset the current league leaders returning home seven point winners. The previously unbeaten Harps held a two point interval lead but a spirited second half showing from the O’Rahilly’s enabled them to kept their opponents to just one solitary score while they secured a 2-10 to 1-6 victory.
The early exchanges seen the sides trade four points as Kevin Cassidy knocked over a point within moments of the throw in while Jonathan Feeley landed a straightforward free kick.
Cassidy was again on target from distance before Shain Gallagher tied proceeding after good work from Ciaran Flaherty and Paul McGrath. Gallagher was unlucky to see an effort at goal go wide while Flaherty rattled the crossbar after being put through by Stephen Maguire.

Derrygonnelly would open up a two point cushion as Declan and Maurice Cassidy both landed scores from close range but it was Belcoo who were playing the slicker football.
Wing forward Kieran Leonard and midfielder John Carrigan were heavily involved in most Belcoo attacks and having carved open the Derrygonnelly defence during another good passage of play Stephen Maguire was sent through on goal to blaze over a point from inside the penalty area before Ronan Ferguson levelled matters at 0-4 each from a free kick.
Into the last ten minutes of the half and Jonathan McGurn tapped over a free kick which Ciaran Flaherty matched with a fine point from the left wing. Derrygonnelly would net their goal on 26minutes as a long punt forward found McGurn who gathered possession and coolly finished into the bottom corner. Belcoo however did land the final score of the half after good work by Feeley on the byline, Flaherty fired over the loose ball soccer style from 10yards which left Derrygonnelly 1-5 to 0-6 up at half time.

Upon the resumption Jonathan McGurn kicked a free for the Harps and this turned out to be the final score the hosts would muster in the encounter. Belcoo took control of the tie with Seamus Conlon at full back impressing while Ryan Leonard, Declan Leonard and Patrick Burns came more and more into the game.
Ronan Ferguson reduced the deficit to two points at 1-6 to 0-7 with a left footed score before the visitors found their first goal on 40minutes. Declan Leonard and Shain Gallagher were involved in the build up down the right wing before Ciaran Flaherty fastened onto the ball and drilled low into the corner beyond Dermott Feely.

Buoyed by the goal Belcoo continued pressing forward, Jonathan Feeley pointed before netting his sides next goal. Ryan Leonard made a block in his own defence to deny a point and within 20seconds he’d joined the attack at the other end to slip Feeley in on goal to move Belcoo into a 5point lead.
Some stout defending from the O’Rahilly’s forced the Harps into hurried shots and with the defence comfortable the visitors looked impressive during the final stages. Substitute Ian Corrigan looked sharp upon his introduction and fed Feeley for another point while Patrick Burns arrowed over the final score from distance as Belcoo ran out comfortable winners in the end.
