Jun. 26, 2013
JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Belcoo 2-12 v 2-12 Erne Gaels
Belcoo and Erne Gaels Juniors will have to meet again to find a winner of this 1st Round Championship game as both sides registered 2-12 in a tight tussle at Garrison on Wednesday evening.
Belcoo had dominated the opening half but two late goals from Erne Gaels before the interval left just one between the sides. Belleek made the brighter start to the second period but a penalty midway through the half sent Belcoo ahead once again however the closing quarter seen the two teams trade points during an engrossing finish to the tie.
The game took a while to spark into life as Erne Gaels squandered three early scoring chances while the O'Rahilly's dropped a number of efforts into the arms of goalkeeper Killian McGloin. It took 5minutes to raise the white flag for the first time as Belcoo's captain Damian Holleran slotted over a neat point. Shain Gallagher strode forward from wing back to land another fine effort on 9minutes while Aaron Dolan clipped a third score for his side on 13minutes.
Erne Gaels would eventually break their duck in front of goal with a quickfire double, Mark O'Shea drilling over before Ronan Cox added a second moments later. At 0-3 to 0-2 Belcoo goalkeeper Aidan Leonard was forced to make a fine save with his legs to keep out a Paul McGuinness effort after the Gaels has carved through the centre of the O'Rahilly's defence.
Things would swing Belcoo's way after this save as a scoring spurt seen them hit 1-2 in a matter of minutes, Gary Maguire would point before he netted the opening goal of the contest having gathered a sublime pass from Aidan McGrath. Now in full flight going forward Belcoo produced a superb move which involved five different players before Damian Holleran applied the finish from distance to put his side into a commanding position at 1-5 to 0-2 coming to the break.
Erne Gaels however would conjure up a goal on 25minutes after a neat interchange of passes down the right which ended with Martin Gilfidder flicking the ball into the path of Jack McCann to tuck into the corner beyond Leonard.
Gary Maguire responded for Belcoo with a 14metre free but a second goal for Erne Gaels on 29minutes left it 1-6 to 2-2. The goal was somewhat fortunate as a Paul McGuinness effort for a point hit the post and fell kindly for Colin Ferguson to finish.
Buoyed by the strong finish to the half Erne Gaels continued on the front foot in the second as they outscored Belcoo four points to one in the ten minutes after the restart. Ronan Cox, Darren McNulty and two Gregory McGloin scores were broken by Damian Holleran who snapped up a score from a loose ball close to goal as Erne Gaels now held sway, leading 2-6 to 1-7.
Patrick Burns who played a pivital roll having entered the fray at half time, a cooly taken penalty and two late frees ensured Belcoo and Erne Gaels would meet again to decide this Junior Championship game. PIC Tim Flaherty
Aaron Dolan raced in to tap over from close range before Belcoo were awarded penalty after Gary Maguire was upended, half time substitute Patrick Burns duly dispatched a confident spot kick into the corner and Belcoo now led by two with 15minutes to play.
The lead wasn't long disappearing as a trio of scores moved Erne Gaels to the front again, Ferguson and O'Shea landed points while a last ditch block from Belcoo defender James Stewart provented a certain goal but the resulting 45 was scored by Ronan Cox. Aaron Dolan however would tie the game for the fourth time in the half with seven minutes remaining, 2-9 each.
More points were traded as neither side could open up a two point advantage, Paul McGuiness had a point cancelled out by a fisted Aaron Dolan score while Darren McNulty put his side ahead again only for Patrick Burns to tap over a free after a strong burst up the field by corner back Dean McDermott.
Ronan Cox would register a free kick in the first minute of stoppage time but with the final kick of the contest in the 64th minute Patrick Burns clipped over a 20metre free in front of the goal to level matters one last time at 2-12 to 2-12.
