MATCH REPORT : Belcoo 1-10 St.Pat's 0-6
May. 7, 2009
Early scoring blast puts Belcoo top
Belcoo 1-10; St. Patrick's 0-06;
An aerial battle for the ball as Belcoo defeated St. Pat’s to go top of the table.<<
A devastating first 15 minutes from Belcoo was the difference between them and St. Pat"s last Wednesday night as the home side picked up the points to move to the top of Division One.
With the opening quarter coming to an end, Belcoo had rattled up 1-07 but they were not to add to that total before half time, with St. Pat"s tagging on a couple of scores to leave it 1-07 to 0-02 at the break.
And it was the Donagh side who had the better of the exchanges throughout the second half but they missed a couple of good chances which meant that they never threatened the Belcoo lead as the O"Rahillys comfortably held out for the points.
With the breeze at their backs the home side came flying out of the blocks with Chris Leonard and Seamus Conlon giving them a good footing at midfield while their forward line were causing problems for the St. Pat"s defence. Kieran Leonard bagged the games only goal when he reacted quickest to a ball that came back off the crossbar to punch it to the net while he was also among the points.
During this productive spell for Belcoo Brian Cox, Gavin Leonard, Ciaran Flaherty, Chris Leonard and full forward Stephen Maguire all fired over points as they took a firm grip on proceedings.
St. Pat"s were forced to move Shane McDermott from midfield to centre half back and this helped stop Belcoo attacking through the middle of the St. Pat"s defence to the degree of success that they did early on, and following this the visitors finally began to settle into the game.
Both sides lost players to injuries during the first half with St. Pat"s Pat Grue and Belcoo"s Gavin Leonard having to be withdrawn after an accidental clash of heads while Ryan Dolan and Ciaran Flaherty also had to be replaced by the home side.
Pat Cadden knocked over a couple of points for St. Pat"s in the first half but at half time they still had a massive mountain to climb, trailing 1-07 to 0-02.
It was St. Pat"s though who had the better of things in the second half and with McDermott and Pat Cadden registering early points they may have hoped to go on and put pressure on Belcoo. However, Belcoo worked hard in the second half to stop St. Pat"s eating into their advantage while St. Pat"s also wasted a couple of goal chances, Cadden having a goal bound shot deflected over the bar while Kevin Maguire pulled an effort wide. The sides went on to trade scores before the end with Ronan Ferguson (2) and Kieran Leonard the Belcoo scorers and Pat Cadden and Jason Cadden on target for St. Pat"s who remain on three points from their opening four games.
