MATCH REPORT : Belcoo 2-4 Derrygonnelly 0-8
Apr. 30, 2009
Early goals crucial in Belcoo win
Belcoo 2-04; Derrygonnelly 0-08;
This is a game that Derrygonnelly feel that they should have taken something out of but the concession of two first half goals was to prove crucial as Belcoo held on for the victory.
Both sides were severely depleted for the game, four or five regulars absent from both line ups, but it was Belcoo who were quicker out of the blocks as they managed to build up a handy advantage with five points separating the sides at half time.
Derrygonnelly though were guilty of missing an abundance of good chances after having the greater percentage of the possession in the first half.
The Harps did respond in the second half but they could only close to within one point of the eventual winners who finished off with a Johnny Feely point that assured them of the points.
Belcoo"s first goal of the encounter arrived with only five minutes on the clock. A high hopeful ball was mishandled by the Derrygonnelly back line and full forward Stephen Maguire could not believe his luck as he collected the ball and rounded goalkeeper Dermot Feely before slotting the ball into the net.
Maguire then rattled over a sideline free to increase the lead for Belcoo, leaving it 1-01 to 0-00 at the break, before they went on to find the back of the Harps net for a second time. A Seamus Conlon ball was not dealt with by the Derrygonnelly defence and it dropped invitingly for Ryan McGovern who had the simple task of tapping the ball into the net to make it 2-01 to 0-00 with 20 minutes played.
The away side finally got off the mark in the finals stages of the half with Ryan Jones, who was a key figure at midfield, knocking over two frees to leave it 2-01 to 0-02 at the interval.
It was a much brighter start to the second half for Derrygonnelly, and when Garrett Greene rifled over two superb points from the right wing it brought them back to within three points of Belcoo, although Maguire responded with an excellent point from close to the right hand sideline to keep Belcoo"s noses in front.
When Noel Gallagher and Kevin Cassidy lofted over points to reduce the deficit to two points, Derrygonnelly maybe sensed a way back into the game but the dismissal of Ruairi Leonard gave Belcoo an extra man and they were able to lift the pressure that Derrygonnelly had been building.
Ryan McGovern"s point again put three between the sides but with Niall Burns and Jones replying for Derrygonnelly they managed to get back to within one point.
However, Belcoo were able to stand firm and, although they lost Seamus Conlon late on to a second yellow card, Feely then fired over the insurance point to secure the victory.
For Belcoo Niall McGovern was very good at full back with Brian Cox and Stephen Maguire both doing their bit in attack for the home side, especially Maguire who provided them with an outlet at full forward.
Derrygonnelly were best served in defence by Bernard McHugh while Garrett Greene and Martin Greene did a lot of good work in the middle third. The Harps lacked penetration in attack but Noel Gallagher was a lively presence up front for them.
