Juniors Reach Semi Final After Big Win
Jul. 9, 2013
JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL: Belcoo 1-17 v 1-6 Maguiresbridge
Belcoo overcame Maguiresbridge in soaring temperatures on an immaculate surface in Derrygonnelly to advance into the Reserve B Championship Semi Final on a score of 1-17 to 1-6. In truth it was a comfortable evening for the O'Rahilly's as they dominanted the majority of the contest before pulling away to record an eleven point win.
Belcoo were off the mark within a minute as Philip Leonard knocked over a fine point from the left wing while Gary Maguire added two more points before David Teague jinked between two men to open the Maguiresbridge account. Seamus Breen would cut the deficit to one with a long range point from the right but a 10th minute Damien Holleran point after a slick interchange between Aidan McGrath and Gary Maguire had Belcoo 0-4 to 0-2 ahead.
The 'Bridge were collecting the breakball in what was a keening contested opening quarter and by the midway stage they had established a lead, 1-3 to 0-5. Breen and Holleran traded points but a John Hanna goal after a cross from Adam Charters proved a telling score. This however was to be the last Maguiresbridge score for some 25minutes.

Belcoo were extremely impressive over the latter part of the half, a solid defence and some neat kick passing to the inside forward line cut the opposition apart. By the interval they had rattled off five unanswered points to move 0-10 to 1-3 in front. A driving run and finish from Aaron Dolan was followed by two close range frees from Damian Holleran when Philip Leonard and Gary Maguire had been upended.
Ian Corrigan, who had showed well throughout for ball, was next to find the target, a neat turn and strong run ended with a wonderful left footed point while Shain Gallagher strode forward from wing back to register his trademark point late in the half.
Belcoo had defended stoutly in the first period with Barry McGovern coming out from defence on several occasions having robbed his opposite number of possession. James Stewart was also going well at full back and this would continue into the second half.
The O'Rahilly's extended their advantage within two minutes of the restart when Gerard Mellor and Shain Gallagher combined to release Aidan McGrath for a simple score. What followed was a precession of wides. Chance after chance was squandered but with Mellor and Patrick Burns now in complete control around the middle the sky blues continued on the front foot.
Damian Holleran would eventually get the scoreboard moving again in the 40th minute as he rattled in a goal after an initial save from Fergal Hanna. That goal moved Belcoo into a commanding 1-11 to 1-3 lead. Dwayne Rice got his side back amongst the points but again Barry McGovern broke from defence to find Holleran on the left and Holleran drilled over his fifth point of the tie.

Conor Durnien would land two frees before the final whistle for Maguiresbridge but Belcoo would continue to bombard the Bridge goal as an overworked 'Bridge defence failed to cope under the pressure. Holleran was again on target from play before substitutes Daniel Ray and Dean McDermott combined to hit three quick points, the latter accounting for two of those scores.
Patrick Burns would knock over two frees in the closing stages of what turned out to be an impressive victory for the O'Rahilly's.
The Juniors return to league action on Sunday at 3.30pm with a home league game v St. Joseph's.
