Another Defeat For Struggling Seniors
Aug. 3, 2013
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1: St. Pat's 1-17 v 0-14 Belcoo
Belcoo suffered a 10th league defeat in their 13 outings this season going down by six points to St. Pat’s in Donagh on Saturday evening. The result certainly eases any worry the home side had of relegation while Belcoo are faced with the real prospect of Divison 2 football next season.
The O’Rahilly’s played some great football in the first half and held a two point interval lead at 0-9 to 0-7, however St. Pat’s took control of the tie midway through the second half and having hit 1-5 without reply they ran out comfortable winners in the end.
Eamon Maguire knocked over the first score from play with Ciaran Flaherty hitting two free kicks while Jonathan Feeley and a Pat Cadden free had it 0-4 to 0-2 by the midway stage.
Jason Cadden cut the deficit to one after a good run from the left wing but Belcoo would dominate the next 10minutes. Barry McGovern was getting himself on a lot of break ball and with the visitors collecting the lion share of the breaks they could mount attacks. Flaherty and Feeley inside were proving a handful and both would find the target again while Patrick Burns added two good points from play.
Eamon Maguire and Jason Cadden did register for St. Pat’s but Belcoo had now a 0-9 to 0-4 advantage coming to half time. The tide began to turn at this stage and St. Pat’s rattled over three late points with Gary Maguire, Jason Cadden and a Pat Cadden free the score takers.
The second half continued in a similar vain, Paul Cosgrove drove forward from midfield to reduce the deficit before another Cadden free had the game level. A sweeping Belcoo move ended with Patrick Burns restoring a lead which was to be short lived as Cadden added two points from the left wing. Seimi Rafferty and Barry McGovern did point for the visitors and with 40minutes played it was 0-12 each.
St. Pat’s took complete control of the remainder of the contest and they penned back Belcoo. An overworked defence began to haemorrhaged scores, Cosgrove and Maguire pointed before a substitute hit a goal on 45minutes. Further scores from Michael McGrade (2) and Cadden had put the hosts into an unassailable lead. Belcoo managed stoppage time free kicks from Feeley and Flaherty but they were nothing more than consolation efforts.
