Lively draw in Tempo

TEMPO  2-11 V 2-11 BELCOO

TWO of the fancied sides in the under-21 competition, Tempo and Belcoo played out an entertaining draw in this lively opening tie played at the Tempo ground in good weather conditions, the home side notching the game's final point to share the spoils.

Late in the hour, Belcoo looked to have edged the contest when corner forward Jonathan Feely made a long solo run that careered him deep into Tempo territory before angling a splendid shot into the top corner of the Tempo net to nudge his teams two points clear with just a few minutes left.

But Tempo struck back with a late flourish and points from Daryl Keenan and finally P J Rodgers earned the home side a deserved draw.

Belcoo had made the early running with headway being made with a goal from Gavin Leonard and they were also to have points from Ronan Ferguson and Jonathan Feely but then Tempo settled down and they hauled themselves back with scores supplied by Daryl Keenan and Aiden Breen.

Best score of the half, however, was to come from Belcoo's full back James Stewart, who was involved in a pitch length movement, which he duly rounded off with an excellent shot from distance.

Tempo hit the front for the first time when they carved out a goal, Daryl Keenan and Rory Foy doing the approach work and Shane McDonald thumped home from the edge of the square but a late point from Ronan Ferguson tied the teams level on 1-6 each at the interval.

It had been an even enough contest between two well-matched teams and that pattern was to continue for the remainder of the game. In the third quarter, points were to be traded regularly. On the mark for Tempo were PJ Rodgers, Thomas Warnock and Daryl Keenan, for Belcoo, Brian Cox and Ronan Ferguson on target.

Ferguson, in fact, had eased Belcoo ahead on 50 minutes before Tempo pounced for their second goal. A high ball lobbed into the visitors' goalmouth was claimed by Rory Foy and he banged in his score.

But the lead was a relatively short-lived one as Feely clipped over a free and then skipped his way in for a goal, which pushed his side two clear. Tempo were able to rise to the demands of the occasion, however, and Keenan narrowed the gap to the minimum with a successful placed kick. The game now moving into added-on time and further Tempo pressure created a final scoring chance for Rodgers to pop over the levelling shot.

For the home side, Niall McCusker fetched well in the middle of the park late in the game and Ciaran Flanagan had a sound match in defence with steady work coming at all times from Ryan Bogue, Daryl Keenan and Ryan Foy.

For Belcoo, Ronan Ferguson was always a presence, Jonathan Feely took a number of fine scores and the Leonard twins also did well. Both teams should be reasonably happy with the point collected and both teams should be in the forefront of this competition over the coming weeks
