Seniors Ease Past Kinawley
Aug. 11, 2013
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1: Belcoo 1-11 v 1-5 Kinawley
Belcoo won the battle of the bottom two in Division 1 at a wind swept MacNean Park on Sunday evening. The O’Rahilly’s recording a 1-11 to 1-5 victory to give themselves a chance to remain in the top flight although they have a difficult run-in ahead.
Playing with the elements in the opening period Belcoo struggled to settle and a long range Sean Leonard free gave Kinawley the lead however it would be some 40minutes before the Brian Boru’s registered their next score.
A nervous opening 10minutes by the O’Rahilly’s saw a number of overhit and underhit passes with wayward shots also causing concern for the hosts. Stephen Maguire was denied what looked like a goal but the referee felt the ball hadn’t crossed the line.
The goal wasn’t far away though as in the 11th minute Belcoo notched their first score and it was to be a three pointer. Ciaran Flaherty’s shot from the left was dropping short but Paul McGrath nipped in to fist the high ball past the Kinawley keeper.
The goal ignited the O’Rahilly’s who would play some neat football over the remainder of the half. Jonathan Feeley landed a long range point before pointing from an acute angle on the right side as his side moved four points clear.
Stephen Maguire kicked a free before a slick move through the Kinawley defence seen Flaherty tap over from close range. Belcoo were in control of matters by the 20minute mark as John Carrigan and Brian Cox had the upperhand in the middle sector. Kinawley were operating a sweeper but Belcoo were patience and Feeley would hit another point from close range cutting in from the left to fire over. By the interval Flaherty was to give Belcoo a 1-6 to 0-1 with a well taken effort.
Now facing into a stiff breeze Belcoo continued to control matters and having kept possession well they worked a free kick 25yards from goal which Feeley confidently knocked over to extend their lead.
Shane McCabe would pick out Paul McGrath who fisted a point before Feeley registered a second free of the half as the O’Rahilly’s moved 1-9 to 0-1 ahead. The hosts had been keeping the ball well during the half against the breeze and with the full back line of Leonard brothers Ryan, Niall and Gavin having fine games Kinawley were struggling to muster a score despite a big wind in their favour.
There was only 12minutes to play when Kinawley did finally score again. A long Sean Doherty ball was plucked from the sky by Matthew Drumm 13yards from goal, he turned and buried the chance while Sean Doherty kicked two close range frees.
Time was against Kinawley and it was goals that was required but Belcoo would added two more points before the full time whistle, Brian Cox fisted a point while substitute Ronan Ferguson kicked a good score.
In the final moments of the contest Ciaran Melanophy and Drumm would kick points which proved consolation scores as Belcoo held on for a deserved six point success.
