Seniors Secure Division 1 Status
Sep. 21, 2013
Belcoo secured their Division 1 status with a facile 0-16 to 0-0 victory over Roslea on Saturday evening. The Shamrocks side bore no resemblance to teams they put out in league and championship this season it is unlikely any more than a few of this side will face the O'Rahilly's in the Championship Final on October 6th.
Belcoo were fit to take advantage of a weakened Roslea to ensure Division 1 football for 2014 and during a completely one sided affair the winners hit 8points in both halves.
It took a while to register the opening score. Some wayward shooting was eventually corrected by the tenth minute when Jonathan Feeley tapped over a close range free. Feeley would register the next four scores, three from play and another free as Roslea struggled to get out of their own half.
John Carrigan and Brian Cox were controlling the middle sector with Barry McGovern getting on several break balls and from here Belcoo continued attacking. Aaron Dolan was next to score after good work by Stephen Maguire while Maguire was on the scoresheet moments later after Paul McGrath robbed a Roslea defender.
The final score before the break came from John Carrigan who won a kickout and broke through a few tackles to slot over a fine score from distance. 0-8 to 0-0.
Ryan McGovern was introduced at the interval, his first appearance since March having recovered from a knee injury. His first act was to drill over a point within 20seconds of the restart. Ciaran Flaherty was also introduced at the break and he would race through to knock over the next two points to extend the lead to eleven.
Further points from Kieran Leonard, Declan Leonard and Paul McGrath were followed by one from substitute James Stewart, a first ever for the defender while another substitute Philip Leonard completed the scoring.
