Feb. 16, 2014
The Under 14’s had an encouraging run out on Sunday in Garrison against Devenish. A high scoring contest seen the hosts seal a victory on a score of 10-13 to 8-13.
In the early exchanges both sides traded a few points with Shane Doherty and Conor McAloon accounting for the Belcoo scores before Devenish rattled in their first goal.
The hosts extended their lead further but Belcoo regained control with McAloon landing two more points while Oran McCann bundled in their first goal.
Cormac McHugh in the Belcoo goal made a few good saves with his feet but was helpless to prevent some more well taken Devenish goals.
Despite the concession of some goals Belcoo defence was doing well. Oisin O’Loughlan and Oisin McGrath reminded solid in the full back line as Emmet McGuinness ventured forward, a good run by McGuinness ending with Dermot Burns netting a second Belcoo goal.
Matthew Mulvey, Ronan Maguire and Lawrence McKeown were all winning their individual battles, continually disposing their opposite number while a finger injury to Fiachra McAloon restricted his involvement in the tie.
As the half approached its conclusion Devenish clipped over a string of points with Shane Doherty replying at the other end as Devenish led 4-8 to 2-5.
Belcoo reappeared after the half time break and took control of the contest registering a swift 3-3 to lead by three points. Dermot Burns again hitting the target after a neat move while Shane Doherty drilled over a 45 and Oran McCann clipped over good point.
With Devenish struggling to clear their lines Oisin Leonard plundered a goal from close range while Shane Doherty added a fifth goal along with a good point from play.
Now trailing for the first time at 5-8 to 4-8 Devenish began to turn the tide in their favour again. Two quick goals had them in front again and it was a lead they never relinquished.
As the game began to stretch the hosts picked off a few more goals while at the other end their goalkeeper was in fine form, saving on several occasions as Belcoo looked for more goals.
By the finish Conor McAloon had two goals while Dermot Burns netted his third. Points were added by Shane Doherty (2), Dermot Burns (2) and Damien McElgunn.
