U14s Start With A Win
Feb. 24, 2014
Belcoo U14’s made a winning start to their season with a comprehensive 17-13 to 7-6 victory in Aughadrumsee on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors took command of the contest in the opening half, playing with the aid of a stiff breeze the O’Rahilly’s found themselves 9-11 to 0-2 up at the interval.
Shane Doherty was a strong presence during this period as he bagged quite a number of goals and points while Conor McAloon, Dermot Burns and Ciaran Flanagan all chipped in as their side extended their lead.
Defensively, the visitors were giving nothing away as Oisin O’Loughlin and Oisin McGrath controlled the full back line with Matthew Mulvey, Ronan Maguire and Lawrence McKeown sweeping up loose balls around the middle sector.
In the second half Aughadrumsee came back into the contest but Belcoo continued to attack and added more scores before the finish.
Midway through the half Shane Doherty saw red which gave the home side an extra man which enabled them to run in a few goals. Cormac McHugh kept out a few efforts while at the other end Conor McAloon and Ciaran Flanagan continued to clip over points while Lawrence McKeown ventured forward and found the net from distance.
Busy forwards Emmet McGuinness and Dara Flanagan were rested with their replacements Mark Ferguson and Oisin Leonard both going close to scoring goals as the game drew to its conclusion.
Gerry Nolan, another second half substitute linked the play well while Damian McElgunn was heavily involved in his sides attacks throughout the hour. Oran McCann impressed as he broke up several attacks and showed off his excellent passing ability with some fine crossfield kicks to set up Belcoo attacks.
