Controversial One Point Defeat In Junior Opener
Mar. 22, 2014
JUNIORS: Aughadrumsee 4-8 v 2-13 Belcoo
Belcoo Juniors began their season with a controversial one point defeat in Aughadrumsee on a score of 4-8 to 2-13. The O'Rahilly's made a desperate start to the game conceding three goals in the opening 12minutes but recovered well and by the interval they trailed by just one point. The visitors were slow again to get going in the second period and by the 41st minute they found themselves seven point adrift.
The controversial moment arrived during the O'Rahilly's second half fightback. Having rattled in a quick 1-2 midway through the half to reduce the deficit to two points, Seimi Rafferty drilled a point over the blackspot from 12yards out but to the shock of everyone on, and around the field, the referee waved for a wide ball. Why? The reason remains unknown following heated discussions at full time, a one point loss which should have been a drawn game. Puzzling to say the least.
Back to the action, a sluggish Belcoo managed the opening score from a Damian Holleran free but what followed was a poor 15minute spell where the hosts blitzed their opposition with a stunning 3-2 to which Belcoo could only conjure up 2points in reply.
Tiarlach Fox capitalised on a loose ball in the Belcoo goalmouth to fire to the net soccer style. Within a minute a shot dropped into the square and was punched to the net by Dale McCrodan. Damian Flanagan added a points from play and a free kick before Gary Maguire responded with a free and Ronan Meehan landed a right wing score.
Having shipped two goals already a third effort found the net on 12minutes and McCrodan was the scorer again. A shell-shocked Belcoo showed good character to battle back into the contest by the interval. Gary Maguire, Aaron Dolan and Philip Leonard all added points with Damian Flanagan tapping over a free for the hosts.
Ian Corrigan would squander a great goal chance after some good work from Declan Leonard and Aaron Dolan, the forward, blazing over the bar from close range. Jack O'Dolan, having been switched into a defensive position ventured forward and was next for find the target with a fine long range point before Belcoo were awarded a penalty in the 29th minute. A strong run from Shain Gallagher seen him bare down on goal before being upended. Philip Leonard drilled the penalty low into the net to leave it 3-3 to 1-8 at half time.
Upon the resumption Aughadrumsee had another scoring spurt to move into a 4-7 to 1-9 lead. Stephen Flynn registered four points while Dale McCrodan hit a wonderful goal to complete his hat-trick having capitalised on a defensive error.
Gary Maguire's free was Belcoo's only score in the ten minutes after the break. Niall Cullen and Shain Gallagher had notched points before an excellent move seen Ian Corrigan breakthrough and tuck the ball into the net to bring just two between the sides at 4-7 to 2-11 after 45minutes.
The next notable moment was Rafferty's point that never was which caused uproar before the game continued and Philip Leonard brought the minimum between the sides again. Belcoo however would never tie the contest, some silly errors in possession seen Aughadrumsee counter attack a pace, Ryan McGovern however made a sublime diving block to deny a certain goal seven minutes from time.
Damian Flanagan put two between the sides having kicked another point on the break. Belcoo pressed late on looking a goal. A number of scrambles and blocks in the Aughadrumsee goalmouth failed to see Belcoo register a score. Philip Leonard picked up a straight red 2mins from time for the visitors and a late Gary Maguire free went over the bar in what ended up a one point loss.
For Belcoo their was solid performances in defence from Shain Gallagher and Niall Cullen while Seamus Conlon and Gerard Mellor got through a lot of work in the middle third.
