Belcoo dominant in modest encounter
Apr. 12, 2014
Brookborough 1-07 Belcoo 1-12
Belcoo Juniors recorded a 1-12 to 1-7 victory over Brookeborough in a low key affair on Saturday evening 12 April. The visiting O'Rahilly's held the upper-hand throughout but didn't guarantee the win until the last 10 minutes.
Brookeborough midfielder Sean Breen tapped over a close free kick after a mistake in defence by Gerard Mellor but this was the only time the hosts held the lead. A sixth minute Philip Leonard point got Belcoo on their way after Aidan McGrath did well to turnover possession at the back before Matthew McAloon fed Leonard who kicked a good score.
Moments later another turnover in defence by Padraig Higgins started a counter attack which saw Kieran Conlon gather possession before slipping in Leonard for a second point. An 11th minute penalty moved the O'Rahilly's 1-2 to 0-1 ahead after Damian Holleran was pulled down and up stepped Philip Leonard to drill home the spot kick from 11 metres.
Holleran would land a good score from play before Seamus Breen again registered a free for the hosts while Sean Campbell added a fine individual score from play to cut the deficit to three.
Gerard Mellor wasn't getting much change from the referee having won some good possession in midfield where he was regularly hounded by Brookeborough men without a free.
Gary Maguire was next to hit the target for Belcoo from a placed ball while Damian Curran replied for the hosts.
As half time approached Kieran Conlon blazed a glorious chance for a goal wide and Philip Leonard also fired wide from a good position but Gary Maguire added another free kick to his name and Aaron Dolan landed a fine point from play to end the half leaving five between the sides on a scoreline of Brookeborough 0-4 to Belcoo's 1-06.
Early scores from Barry McGovern and Kieran moved Belcoo into a strong position with McGovern driving forward from centre back to pop over a long range point while Conlon's points would give the visitos a seven point cushion. However, Conlon's point would be Belcoo's last for 21 minutes as the quality of the contest disintegrated.
Intermittent frees from Breen in the 38th and 45th minute left five between the sides before the hosts cut through the Belcoo defense with a second half substitute palming the ball into the net with 48 minutes played.
Belcoo would eventually end their drought with a Gary Maguire free kick seven minutes from time but John Boyle cancelled out this effort before Belcoo finally secured the win late on with points from another Maguire free, Philip Leonard and Damian Holleran.
