Newtownbutler 0-04 Belcoo 2-14

The senior team got their league campaign off to a winning start after a convincing 2-14 to 0-04 victory over a poor Newtownbutler side.

Even the sending off of midfielder Seamus Conlon at the start of the second half didn’t hamper the visitors who scored 1-10 without reply in the second period.

Belcoo were first on the scoreboard courtesy of Shain Gallagher and were dominant throughout the field but were struggling to convert the pressure into scores.

Ciarán Flaherty, Gavin Leonard and John Carrigan popped over scores for the visitors while Sean Mullaney, aided by a stiff breeze converted four frees for Newtownbutler in the first half.

Belcoo could have been further ahead but a fine save from the Newtown goalkeeper denied Gavin Leonard but a goal would come as the first half was drawing to a close.

Pressure from Belcoo forwards forced a turnover 20 yards out and Brian Cox made no mistake as he bore down on goal, rounding the keeper and slipping the ball into the net.

Another point from Flaherty gave Belcoo a four-point cushion going in at the half on a score line of 1-05 to 0-04.

The second half had barely started when Seamus Conlon received his marching orders for a strike on his midfield opponent but the numerical disadvantage did not bother Belcoo as they completely controlled proceedings and the game was wrapped up when Johnny Feeley slotted home from an acute angle midway through the half.

Feeley was a prominent figure throughout the half on the scoreboard knocking over four points as he and Cox won everything that went into them.

Flaherty added his third of the game before shooting wide when straight on goal while Gavin Leonard added his second after good work from Paul McGrath.

Brain Cox, Paul McGrath and substitute Aaron Dolan added further points as the visitors continued to dominate while Newtown were unable to break down a determined and organized Belcoo defence which set the platform for a free scoring second half.

So a solid team performance sealed the two points for the O’Rahilly’s against a disappointing Newtown side and the victory will give them confidence going into a busy schedule of fixtures over the next month.

Best wishes and a get well soon to Shain Gallagher who had to leave the field with a shoulder injury.
