Seniors Slump To Defeat In Belleek
May. 16, 2014
SENIORS: Erne Gaels 0-14 v 1-4 Belcoo
Erne Gaels extended their winning run to four straight games with a comfortable 0-14 to 1-4 success at home to Belcoo on Thursday evening. The O’Rahilly’s are now four games without a win following a good start to the campaign as their slide down the table continues.
Few would have foreseen such a big win during a tight opening fifteen minutes which seen the sides tied at three each but the hosts burst into a five point advantage by the interval and were rarely troubled afterwards. Belcoo though would miss some guilt edge points in the second period in particular but in truth Erne Gaels were in control and ran out deserving winners.
An error ridden opening quarter seen Belcoo fail to breakthrough the Erne Gaels defence having held possession for considerable amounts of time without chalking up a score. The first point of the tie came from the boot of Barry McCann, a long range placed ball before Seamus Ryder landed his first of the game for two nil.
Ian Corrigan would open Belcoo’s account as the ten minute mark approached with a well taken effort from the left. Jonathan Feeley was next to register cutting in from the right to fire over and Paul McGrath added a third in as many minutes racing through from wing forward to fist over the bar.
The one point advantage was short lived as Thomas McCaffrey strode in from the left to fist a point while Ryder (2), Ronan Cox, McCaffrey and Paul McGuinness all helped themselves to scores before the interval as the hosts penned back Belcoo. James McGrath was forced into a good save from McCaffrey or it could have been worse for Belcoo who trailed 0-8 to 0-3 at the break.
Four fruitless forays forward by Belcoo upon the resumption was compounded by Erne Gaels registering with their first attack 5minutes into the half, Thomas McCaffery again on target. The visitors had a half chance for a goal in the early exchanges, Ian Corrigan’s shot kept out by the legs of a defender in a crowded goalmouth.
Belcoo however would conjure up a goal after their best move of the game, Ciaran Flaherty found Ian Corrigan out on the forty, he in turn drilled a ball into Jonathan Feeley who beat his marker and drove in towards goal before feeding Paul McGrath who tucked the ball into the net. 0-9 to 1-3.
The goal however didn’t spark any revivial as Ryder accounted for two more points from close range frees while Brian Cox did arrow over a point, Belcoo never looked like mounting a comeback. Erne Gaels would go on to kick three more points while James McGrath was again called upon to deny a goalbound effort as Erne Gaels picked up the 2points and leapfrogged Belcoo in the table.
