High Scoring Win For Juniors in Belleek
May. 18, 2014
JUNIORS: Erne Gaels 3-12 v 6-15 Belcoo
Belcoo Juniors played their first game in 4 weeks and recorded a twelve point victory over Erne Gaels in a high scoring encounter in Belleek on Sunday afternoon. It was a case throughout that both sets of forwards held the upperhand in a free scoring contest.
Within 30seconds Erne Gaels Luke Ryder got through on goal but fired straight at Jack O'Dolan who saved comfortably. Straight up the field Belcoo went and they did manage to register a three pointer. Philip Leonard and Aaron Dolan combining on the left before Dolan's shot was flicked into the net by Ian Corrigan from close range.
Ryder was to prove to be the hosts main talisman in what was his first ever adult game. The seventeen year old would finish the day with 3-6 of his sides tally and he would rattle in 1-1 following the Belcoo goal to move his side into the lead.
Damian Holleran would tie the game on 7minutes when his initial effort for goal rebounded back to him before he elected to tap over at the second attempt. Within a minute Ian Corrigan had his second goal, Declan Leonard, Philip Leonard and Aaron Dolan again involved as Corrigan fired low into the corner.
Corrigan would then take a clean catch from the resulting kickout before slipping the ball to Ronan Meehan to land a point for 2-2 to 1-1 with 10minutes played. Aaron Dolan surging run almost yielded a third Belcoo goal but his effort grazed the post. From here Belcoo took over and had an extremely profitable period in front of goal.
Ian Corrigan pointed a long range free from the ground while Damian Holleran drilled in a goal and Gary Maguire pointed a free after Aidan McGrath was fouled. The scores continued to flow for the O'Rahilly's as Philip Leonard found the target and Ian Corrigan was again to score having gathered a sideline ball from Dolan, he drove in and almost netted his third goal, the ball striking the crossbar and going over to see Belcoo lead 3-6 to 1-2 after 20minutes, Jack McCann the Erne Gaels scorer having ran through from 40yards to fist a point.
The hosts however responded well to being 10points down as Luke Ryder hit his second goal while points from Jack McCann and Christopher Ryder had halved the deficit to five. That good work was undone as Gary Maguire would see a tame effort beat the home keeper and with Damian Holleran adding another point Belcoo were well ahead again as the interval approached.
A stunning goal from Luke Ryder in added time seen the corner forward finish the half with a hat-trick of well taken goals and a fine Oisin Kelm point has just five between the sides at Half Time: Erne Gaels 3-5 v 4-7 Belcoo.
There was no closing down in the second half as within a minute Belcoo had won a penalty as a Damian Holleran effort was blocked by the foot of a defender. Philip Leonard's penalty was magnificent turned over the bar by the Erne Gaels keeper.
A strong run by Barry McGovern from corner back ended with Ronan Meehan pointing from the right before Martin Gilfeeder and Jack McCann registered points for the Belleek men as they remained five behind with 10minutes played in the second period.
In the 41st minute Ian Corrigan almost netted his third goal, his shot hitting the butt of the post and falling to Aaron Dolan to finish to the net. Over the course of the net ten minutes Belcoo would outscore their opponents five point to two. Both Erne Gaels scores coming from Ryder while Gary Maguire (2), Damian Holleran (2) and Aaron Dolan all landed scores for the visitors.
In the closing five minutes as the game drew to and end, Ian Corrigan picked out a great pass to Damian Holleran for the Galway to fire over his fifth point of the day before substitute Aidan McKenna slipped in Declan Leonard for a sixth Belcoo goal. Late points from Ryder and Gilfeeder seen the scoring fest finish 6-15 to 3-12 to Belcoo.
