U14s Into Championship Semi Final
Jun. 3, 2014
UNDER 14 CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL: Belcoo 17-14 v 3-4 Aughadrumsee
Belcoo U14s made it through to the Semi Final of Championship following a hefty victory over Aughadrumsee on Tuesday evening in Derrylin. The young O’Rahillys late burst of scoring in the first period seen them hold a 9-8 to 2-4 interval lead which was extended in an improved second half showing.
From the throw in Belcoo worked a goal with Shane Doherty firing to the net while Dermot Burns and Oran McCann also netted in the first ten minutes. Conor McAloon had three points to his name with Doherty also splitting the posts however the O’Rahilly’s hadn’t it their own way as Aughdrumsee had his 2-2 during the same period.
Belcoo’s basic skills let them down on a few occasions but they would continue to hold the upperhand and by the 20minute mark it was 6-6 to 2-3. Burns adding two more goals alongwith a Ciaran Flanagan three pointer. Flanagan and McAloon continuing to clip over points as well.
In the latter part of the half it was all Belcoo, although good goal chances were squandered they did managed three more by the break. Shane Doherty registering two with a fisted effort from Ciaran Flanagan sandwiched between both of Doherty's strikes.
A swift 1-1 upon the resumption from Ciaran Flanagan helped Belcoo continue on the attack. At this stage Aughadrumsee were struggling to clear their lines and Conor McAloon fired in another goal. The impressive Damian McElgunn would get among the scores hitting a quickfire 2-2 while Oran McCann knocked over a fine point and Ciaran Flanagan registered a goal.
The best move of the game seen a sharp fist passing move involving Fiachra McAloon, Oran McCann, Conor McAloon and Damian McElgunn cut open the Aughdrumsee defence for the latter to drill in his third goal of the half. Mark Ferguson was next to open his account, taking his time in front of goal before cooly slotting past the Aughadrumsee goalkeeper. Ferguson would quickly bury a second goal moments later.
Points were also being knocked over as Doherty and McElgunn had Belcoo in an unassailable lead 17-14 to 3-4 before the referee called time on the game some 15minutes early.
Belcoo will expect a tougher assignment against St. Pat’s in the Semi Final next Tuesday evening. A venue and time to be confirmed. Training continues Thursday at 7pm.
