Belcoo And Newtown Play Out A Draw

Box Score

Jun. 8, 2014

SENIORS: Belcoo 1-11 v 1-11 Newtownbutler

Belcoo and Newtownbutler both registered 1-11 in Sunday's league encounter in MacNean Park as a late 45 from Paul McGrath ensured a share of the spoils. This was a keenly contested affair which neither side really took control off at any stage. At the interval Belcoo held a one point advantage 0-6 to 0-5 before both sides shared second half goals from Brian Cox and Jason Flanagan with the contest eventually ending in a tie.

Belcoo would open the scoring early on as Jonathan Feeley pointed from an acute angle before James Connolly's long range point got Newtown moving moments later. Feeley and Jarleth Jackman would exchange frees before Newtown moved two clear by the halfway stage, Frank Mulligan and Brendan McBrien on target.

Belcoo rallied in the latter part of the half with Ciaran Flaherty splitting the posts from play having gathered a high ball while he also knocked over and a dead ball. Declan Leonard would add a fifth point for his side having joined the attack to arrow over a fine point restoring Belcoo's narrow advantage at 0-5 to 0-4.

With the interval approaching a Newtown free restored parity but Belcoo would take a one point lead into the break, a Jonathan Feeley free struck the post with Paul McGrath quickest to react, setting up Christopher Leonard to score.

Into the second half and Niall McGovern struck the post with a effort for a point in the opening attack before Newtown raised the white flag at the other end, another close range Brendan McBrien free kick. Jonathan Feeley pointed for Belcoo while that score was again cancelled out by the visitors Belcoo did register their goal.

A turnover in midfield seen John Carrigan, Paul McGrath, Christopher Leonard and Jonathan Feeley all combine in a swift break forward with the ball finding its way to Brian Cox who fired low into the corner. 1-7 to 0-7 Belcoo now led.

Newtown remained within touching distance as Jackman and McBrien pointed frees. There continued to be very little to separate the sides as the fixture moved into the last quarter. Paul McGrath would land a free from distance with Flaherty receiving treatment for a knock that won the free but a Newtown goal gave the visitors the lead soon after. A tame effort for a point by Jason Flanagan dropped into the corner of the net beyond a helpless Aidan Leonard in the home goal. Newtown now holding the advantage 1-9 to 1-8.

Jonathan Feeley would tap over a close range free after Flaherty was again the victim of a foul and once more the sides were level. With 6minutes to play Newtown again found a score to lead but a quickly taken free from McGrath to the unmarked Ryan Leonard seen the defender fire over an equaliser.

A disputed free kick gave Brendan McBrien an easy opportunity in front of goals which he converted with ease but Belcoo would have one last chance to salvage a draw with what was the final kick. Paul McGrath stroking over a 45 to see the two teams finish up with 1-11 each.

Again there is a break for a number of weeks due to Fermanagh's involvment in the Qualifiers.
